Rules for 26 August 2003

Zen Faulkes, sent 27 August 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Greetings,

Absolutely nothing about Wedge in this post!

Seppuku Timing (was Re: [L5R-CCG] Jeff???) To:

It is not an issue of having special, faster-than-Reaction timing. Seppuku simply has an earlier trigger. The timing of Samurai (and, in Diamond, Courtier) seppuku to reduce an honor loss will be the same in Diamond as it is in Gold, which is this:

"If one of your Personalities with the Samurai trait causes you to lose Honor by taking(*) an action, getting targeted by an action, or making a decision, you can order the Samurai to commit seppuku in shame to lower the Honor loss to 1 point." [GE p. 65]

The problem is that the trigger is that the samurai ". . .causes you to lose honor by . . .", meaning that there has been an honor loss.

Causes precede effects. Seppuku is a response to the *cause* of an honor loss. Most Reactions are responses to the the honor loss itself, which is the *effect* of whatever the Samurai did.

Rules Question: Bayushi Kwanchai XP + Shamate Pass

I seem to recall reading a ruling once that implied that deceased personalities kept the permanent-duration changes to their stats even when in places other than the discard pile sideways.

No need to rely on memory. It's in the Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 39, in bold type.

Assuming I bought out Bayushi Kwanchai XP from a Shamate Pass earlier in the game, increasing his PH by 2, and I later use his ability to 'die' to the top of the dynasty deck, when he reappears in one of my provinces next turn, what is his PH?

Increased by the effect of the Pass (card text).

A similar question holds for the Gempukku addition of the Samurai trait.

Same answer.

Jeff??? (was Re: Rules for 25 August 2003)

Yes, because Diamond is going to bring with it numerous and major rules and card text changes. Zen is only answering questions about the current environment.

Would it be possible to have the answers for the diamond, please?

Not from me, for reasons I have previously stated. Sorry.

Stay your blade versus Taut bowstrings

If I use the 2nd reaction on Taut bowstrings in response to my opponent playing Stay your blade and I destroy the Samurai personality who is trying to go home, is the card draw of Stay your blade cancelled because the cost hasn't been met?

Yes.

Kyuden Ikoma rules Q

If I use Kyuden Ikoma to cancel someone using Overwhelmed, do they still have to destroy their personality?

Currently, canceling Overwhelmed when it's played saves the Personality (as Jeff Alexander mentioned -- the man's saving me a lot of work!).

Reserve Commander (WoC)

How [does] Reserve Commander work for followers with an honour requirement of 2 or more or that have attachment restrictions like Lion's Pride/Kenshinzen.

Reserve Commander bypasses attachment requirements, because it says the new Personality is created "leading that unit" (card text).

Wedge

are Political Reactions considered Political Actions?

Yes (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 47).

The Four Winds March is a Political Battle Action but is the target Personality performing a Political Action?

No (Winds of Change rulesheet).

Correction from one of my earlier posts. When Shiba Yoma (Experienced) is in a battle with no Shugenja in which Night Battle is in play, shugenja outside the battle can cast spells and kiho for that battle. No other actions are permissable, though.
