Rules for June 11th - Part Two!

Vaughn Derderian, sent 12 June 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hey folks. Moving on...

Can destroy the shugenja who has the spell attached (and who bows for using it) when paying the costs to put an oni into play ?

(Talking about I Give You my Name)

Depends on the text of the specific Oni. For the most frequently used IGYMN Oni with relevant text, Tsuburu, yes.

2) Daidoji Rekai exp is somehow prevented from moving into a battle (ie she followed a new path, she sees an ambush). She tries to move in, targeting someone with her ranged attack before movement is announced (targeting comes first, right?). Does her ranged attack still resolve?

Yes.

How does Rekai shoot anyone from home? As she isn't in a battle, there are no units opposing her for her to shoot, correct? What would be the difference between the Ambush/Rekai situation above, and an Archer sitting at home shooting into a battle that I had presence at?

Well, Rekai exp. has an action that allows her to move into a battle and shoot someone with a Ranged 3. In the case of an Ambush, she's allowed to take the action, and when the action starts resolving, all parts of it that can happen will happen. In this specific case, she's not allowed to actually move into the battle, but that doesn't prevent her ranged attack. Strange, but true.

Can the bonuses from a celestial sword be negated by wholeness of self?

Everything except the printed +1 Chi, yes.

Two rules questions that have been bugging me for a while:

1. Is "The Deathless" a Naval card? It has Naval printed specifically in boldface in its traits area, thus it follows the "rulebook definition." (Page 33, An Oni's Fury Rulebook, "Abilities and Traits") However, a judge ruled against me at the Region 12 Kotei, stating that it could not be bowed for two actions via Kyuden Gotei as it "specifically handed out the Naval trait, but did not have it itself." (Memory's fuzzy, was a week or two ago.) Have since played other opponents that have argued for and against....possible to get a final ruling here?

Well, anything's possible. The Deathless has a trait that has the word Naval in it, and it's even in boldface. However, the precedent is that a Keyword, even a boldface one, that is part of a sentence trait, doesn't count for giving that trait. This goes way back, to when The Nameless One came out and people wondered whether or not he had the Shadowlands trait.

So, no. The Deathless is not Naval.

2. I understand that non-Gold factions, such as the Brotherhood/Naga/Toturi's Army can be named via the "Alliance" event for reduced Gold costs. However, if a Personality has such a "dead" faction trait, such as Saigorei Exp., does Friendly Traveler Village produce 4 gold when paying for him? A better example off the top of my head just now would be Hoshi Wayan Exp.2, who is an "Unaligned Monk."

Nope. Even though those Factions have no Strongholds in Gold, they still count as Factions, and their Faction traits are still enough to disqualify them from getting 4 gold from Friendly Traveler Village.

3. On that note, are there any "advantages" to having the "Unaligned" trait in Gold?

Sure! There's Make Your Choice and Toturi's Shrine! They're not much, but it's better than nothing...

Just a couple quick ones...

If I play Kyuden Agasha, am I able to attach spells during battle?

As long as you're attaching them to a personality who's in the battle, yes.

Also, can Travelling Ronin attach during battle?

Same as above.

And and, can you blow bronze lantern during battle?

As long as the personality with the Lantern is in the Battle, sure.

What's happening when I use Kakita Noritoshi (soul of Doji Jiro) reaction (double focus value of one card when revealed, you cannot double the focus of a card whose focus value has changed) with Let You Spirit Guide You (Focus value equals personal honor + 2).

Am I allowed to do that to get a focus value = 8 ?

No. Jiro's ability will not work on any focus card whose value in a duel is something other than what's printed in the little circle on the bottom of the card.

My question is will Wholeness of Self prevent the force bonus granted by The Tactician trait? Is this bonus considered to come from a card in the unit, the personality in this case, or is it considered to be a rulebook effect and why does that let wholeness work or stop it. Or is the bonus for tactician considered to come from somewhere else?

The tactician bonus comes from the action in the rulebook, so Wholeness of Self will indeed negate it.

Does bowing a personality to pay the cost of playing an action for Storms of War occur before or after targeting for that action?

Before. Bowing a Personality or Follower for Storms must be done "before the action is begun", which would be upon announcement.

For instance, if I have Daidoji Uji who is a tactician as my only personality and Sotrms of War is affecting the battle, can I

1) Superior Strategist for a Twisted Forest (The Sup Strat targets Uji, the Twisted Forest does not)

Neither. You announce the Superior Strategist, then you have to bow a personality or follower, then you start announcing targets and such.

Also note, you would have to bow another personality or follower to play whatever action you're going to get with Superior Strategist.

2) Superior Strategist for an Iaijutsu Duel (Both the Sup Strat and Iaijutsu Duel target Uji)

Again, no. Drop a Spearmen on that Uji or something.

Ten more, coming soon!
