Jeff Alexander, sent 22 May 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Recruiting Drive

Can shadowlands followers be placed under the forgotten tomb?

...you mean from the discard pile, I assume? No. Recruiting Drive lets you "bring Followers into play from your discard pile." Putting a card under the Forgotten Tomb is not bringing it into play -- bringing it FROM the Tomb is. [card text]

2. Barricades do not prevent an offensive naval invasion, Correct?

Incorrect. They do prevent the Attacker from taking the first normal action. They do not prevent the battle from being declared Naval, and they do not prevent the other effects of a naval invasion.

So, if my opponent attacks a province of mine that has barricades, I still get the first action? And my opponent cannot play a terrain until I take an battle or open action or pass? (not that it matters if I get first action)

Correct.

But if I move the Rending personality to another battle, all the restrictions on Rend are ignored in this other battle, correct?

Correct.

Looking for an official word on Forgotten Tombs

Checked the rulings without an answer, so I put it to the list.

Forgotten Tombs comes into play during your Dynasty phase bowed. As its ability does not require it bowing, can you immediately begin stashing appropriate cards under it, or do you need to wait until it straightens?

GE rulebook, p. 24:

] Once a card or Stronghold bows, it cannot take another action ] until it straightens, not even an action that does not bow the ] card. Bowing does not turn off continuous effects of a card, ] such as traits, Force and Chi bonuses, or effects that are not ] actions (see page 47 for the definition of "action").

The Forgotten Tomb has no actions on it at all. Its functions are completely unhindered by being bowed. You may use it immediately.

Goshio no Shiryo... Jeff

Not sure if this has been posted or not.

Can a personality with Goshio no Shiryo and a diplomatic apprentice perform the following.

1. Use the ability on Goshio, bow the apprentice for the cost and then bow the personality for a duplicate effect causing a 4 honor loss each time the target personality is bowed?

or

2. Use the ability on Goshio, bow the personality, then use the ability again using the diplomatice apprentice to pay the cost for the 2nd use?

You need to bow the Personality for the first action and the Diplomatic Apprentice for the second. If you bow the Apprentice first, the effect ends immediately. (General ruling: all durations of "until card X straightens" should read "while card X remains bowed")

If either of these work, could you also target different personalities with each useage?

Yes.

Does the Crane Sronghold Kostan Shiro prevent Fantastic Gardens from costing 2 less gold for crane players? does the same go with diadoji merchants?

Yes and yes.

question

Sneack Attack + Scout

If I have a unit with scout attached, and attack a province and play sneack attack do I get to play and action and then play a terrain, or should I play a terrain and then get an action?

You may do both, in either order.

Of Sneaks and Scouts...

But here's the question I want answered:

Let's say I'm the attacker, and I choose to resolve a battle with no units. Let's say the defender passes, and I then move a unit (with a "Scout" follower attached) into the battle. Can I immediately play a Terrain? The defender hasn't taken an "action" yet. He/she passed. Or does passing count as an action for the sake of the Scout?

The Defender has had his first opportunity to act in this battle. The Scout no longer has any effect.

Questions Regarding Kakita Chiyeko

Kakita Chiyeko can use the Kakita Dojo ability to move into a duel when she is bowed can she not?

No. Chiyeko needs to issue or receive the challenge to use her Reaction. [card text] Kyuden Doji is used after the challenge is issued, and swaps someone into the duel who neither challenged nor received a challenge.

Can she do this when Toshimoko no Shiryo is attached to her?

She cannot use her Reaction if she has Toshimoko no Shiryo attached.

Of Sneaks and Scouts...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought passing was considered 'taking an action' for those purposes.

Passing is not an action, no, but it does use up your chance to act.
