Rules for 22 April 2003
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Greetings,
Ruling: Ruins of Iawa Castle [ZEN]
Mercy Shrouds the Earth is played *after* Deadly Ground is played and its restrictions are in force. The kiho's text specifically says, "after." Because the Ruins of Isawa Catle's ability does not destroy or replace Deadly Ground, it is not legal.
I take it the distinction here is the reason why most canceling effects are properly worded in the present, rather than past tense?
Could be. Really a question for a Lead Designer rather than me.
Deeds Not Words question
My opponent casts The Wind's Truth to redirect the honor gain to himself [with Deeds, Not Words in effect]. Does he gain or lose honor?
Lose. He didn't gain the honor via battle or duel.
Ranged Attack Question
Moto Chen's hanging around with a Dai-Kyu and a Shinjo Horsebow. Which of the following combined attacks can he make? A. Five without Bowing. (Dai-Kyu + Horsebow)
Yes.
B. Six by bowing (This is a gimmie)
No.
C. Seven by bowing.
Yes.
Shinjo Xushen has equipped a Dai-Kyu, and assigned as Infantry. Can he combine with his weapon for a range 8?
No; 7. He is only performing one Ranged Attack (combined), so it only gains +1 strength.

Retirement A) Does not say Target. B) Effects a "class" of people (Humans with the highest Chi). It therefore does not target, correct?
Ah. I wasn't sure where the nub of the confusion was, so I missed the real question: Does Retirement target?
Not sure, as the Archive suggests Rule 3 only applies to cards whose text includes things like "all," and Retirement isn't worded that way. I'll check with the Rules Junta.
Old questions.
the basis for the ruling is that Lesser Shines care about *self-inflicted* honor losses. Whether the loss comes from the action or the decision to refuse is moot.
So, what if the honor loss [from a refused Iaijustu Challenge] is Wind's Truthed?
The source of an effect does not change when it is redirected. Bang goes the budgie. Or Lesser Shrine, as the case may be.

After a deck has been shuffled and/or cut by my opponent can I then cut and/or shuffle my deck?
No. Kind of defeats the point.
A *cut* is legal. Nothing more.
Not according to the Code of Bushido.

[Re: Overwhelmed]
Overwhelmed allows you to make one of two choices. If you can't send home two units AND you can't target your largest unit, then you can't make either choice, right? If you -can- make a choice that you can only partially fulfill, then you should always be able to try to send home two units and always be able to try to destroy your largest unit, regardless of whether or not either effect will succeed. If you -can't- make a choice that you can only partially fulfill, then being unable to send home two units and being unable to target your largest unit should make this card have no effect.
That's not what the archived rulings say. Basically, you have to exhaust the "full, complete" effects before you can opt for picking an effect that can only be partially fulfilled.
More Gifts and Favors! Whhheeee!
It seems that the middle ruling regarding calling a neutral party to check your provinces is contrary to the current wording of the card[.]
Yeah. It's obsolete. I had already removed it, but hadn't uploaded the most recent version. By the time you read this, it'll be gone.
Rules Question
My opponent challenges one of my personalities, I refuse. I use Wind's Truth to redirect the honor loss back to him. Can I use someone's Jester to double his honor loss?
Yes.
2. Use a storyteller to increase his honor loss?
You mean Doji Nagori? Yes.
3. Use that Imperial M-something holding since his own card is causing him the honor loss?
No. Timing is off, since, as we've discussed in detail the last couple of days, Imperial Messenger has to be played after the action is announced but before costs are paid and its effects begin to resolve.
And can he play Defend Your Honor or We Will Have Revenge on said honor loss?
No, and no. It's his action. Source does not change with redirection.
Can I play We Will Have Revenge if I cannot target mine, my opponents, or both player's units for some reason (such as, we don't have any), and it still negate the honor loss?
According to card text, yes. But wording to indicate costs have been known to be off before. I'll check with the Rules Junta.

That Show of Good Faith lacks "explicit" directions strikes me as a rather shallow way to make rulings on the card.
If you want deep, I can recommend several volumes of poetry. *shrug* Take it up with Jeff Alexander when he gets back.
Rules questions re: Tacticians
if I controlled Moto Chen, then my opponent Kolat Masters him, we get into a battle, and my opponent uses Chen's Tactician trait, and then I take Chen back via Loyalty Renewed in the middle of the battle. The part in the above paragraph that caught my eye was the "Their controller may"...does that mean that even after my opponent uses Chen's Tactician trait in a battle, once I gain control of him in the same battle, I can then use the trait myself?
Yes.
rules question
once I assign units to a battle, is the legality of the particular assignment checked or not?
In the case of Fields of the Dead, you only have to meet restrictions before assignment occurs. Other cards may have different wordings.
Question
If someone plays Torrential Rain at Province four, the battle may have ended but it has not resolved. So can I play Accessible Terrain at Province 4 and move units back into it then resolve it?
No. The battle has ended.
Zen - Desertion querys
If Desertion is in play, and I turn up a region in a province that already has a region, I can leave it there and return it to my Dynasty deck at the end of my turn?
Yes.
If Desertion is in play, and I have used one of many methods of turning some of his cards face up, his cards stay there at the end of my turn. (They only go back at the end of your own turn.)
Yes.
And that's the end of my guest stint as your Q&A guy for the time being. Jeff Alexander tells me has his workload somewhat under control, so he'll be picking up questions again tomorrow.
You can stop sticking "Zen" in your subject lines now. :) (Actually, they don't make a lot of difference to me, because I get this in digest mode, so I look at every message.)
