Jeff Alexander, sent 5 September 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Shiba House Guard Q

Will their force fluctuate if attached to a personality with the Celestial Sword?

Yes.

Rules Question (JEFF)

My own reading of the cards is that Badge of Purity would have no effect. Nothing has happened to the duelist's chi. It's just no longer being used as the stat in the duel.

Face Me! does not say "this duel is a duel of Personal Honor". It says "Replace [both duelists'] Chi with their Personal Honor until the duel ends." That's (probably) a change to their Chi stat, and that change is a penalty if it's bringing her Chi to a lower number.

Broken Blades legality

When is broken blades tournament legal. 30 day after it´s release?

Yes. It was released August 19th.

Hatamoto & Shadowlands

Hatamoto. Holding 10G Unique Retainer Bow the Hatamoto and discard the Imperial Favor to pay the full Gold cost of any one card. This may not pay for cards with variable Gold costs.

This isn't an action, and buying cards during the dynasty phase isn't an action either: can a Shadowlands player use this if s/he has somehow acquired the Favour, eg, becase Kolat Courtiers has resolved.

Yes.

post for 3 September 2002 - In Time of War

Actually, it does forbid you from having more at any point during the turn. It works like a maximum on a stat, like Domotai's cap on total Force.

So I gain 8 ia a single hit, IToW drops it to 5, what happenes to the rest of the gain?

Nothing. It's still an 8 point gain. But that gain can't raise your total past a certain amount.

Jeff??? Stand against the wave clarification....

I know this has been discussed before, but I'm confused when reading the ruling....

Stand Against the Waves 1) The attacker / defender may bow allied units. [FAQ]

2) Initially targets another player, not their cards (Card text). May be played if you are a Yodin Sensei player, but if played against you in a multi-player game, you may not bow allied Personalities. [JA, 4 December 2001]

3) The first effect always occurs (or attempts to) and always targets Personalities (i.e., Reactions to an action targeting a Personality are always playable). It does not sometimes skip to the second, untargeted effect. [JA, 18 December 2001]

My specific question is, can I cancel this with Way of Shadow/Flee the Darkness/Ninja Tricks if its my personalities that would bow?

Part 2 says to me, it doesnt target my cards it targets me so I couldnt cancel it with those cards.

Part 3 seems to contradict that.

Read the first word: "initially". The only target chosen by the person playing Stand Against the Waves is the commanding player of the other army. Then THAT player targets cards in his or her own army for the bowing effects.

If Stand Against the Waves is played against you, you can cancel it with Flee the Darkness when you target your own Personalities, because Flee doesn't care which player is doing the targeting. Likewise with Way of Shadow. And Ninja Tricks can cancel it because Ninja Tricks doesn't care what the action targets -- Ninja Tricks can cancel any action card played by someone besides you.

rules questions

1. face your fear vs. Asako towers.

player A is playing shadowlands. Player B is playing Asako towers.

A's card with fear targets players B unit.

Player B does not react with a reaction to cancel the action.

does this end the phase where player B can take reactions?

The Reaction on the Asako Towers must be used when the Fear action's target is selected. [stronghold text] Player B has to choose right now whether he's going to cancel the action. If he chooses not to, and no one else has any Reactions to the Fear's targeting selection, he can't change his mind later.

Player A then play's face your fear on their successful fear effect, modifying the fear.

the fear still targets the same cards, it is not extending it to also target the personality.

Can the asako towers deck cancel the fear effect after their opponent plays face your fear?

I'd say no. Targeting happens first, then costs are paid, then effects happen. The Face of Fear isn't played until "when one of your cards creates Fear". You're pasting the targeting stage by then.

2. Yoritomo Soetsuko

Reaction: Bow before one of your personalities in this army bows due to a another player's card effect to negate the bowing

you ruled that she needed to be in battle to use her reaction.

why?

Because she says "this battle".

do reactions now require presence and or relevence?

No.

I took that the in this battle, meant that you could only use her reaction during a battle, particularly one that is resolving.

An action using the phrase "this battle" on a type of card that can be present in a battle (such as a Personality) can only be used if its card is in the current battle. [DA rulebook p. 58]

do clan champions need to be in the army to play ( faith in my clan?

No. They need to be in "your army", which can be any army at any Province (but not at home -- units in your home are, by definition, not in an army).

do asako towers shugenja need to be in the battle to cancel a battle action?

No.

do you now need to have a unit in battle to use Fall on your knees?

No.

Actually, it does forbid you from having more at any point during the turn. It works like a maximum on a stat, like Domotai's cap on total Force.

so does this mean that if an honor gain exceeds the FH+5 limit but an honor loss is later that turn suffered, tha the excess is then gained.

Yes. (It's not really "gained" again. You can just see it now.)

rules questions

Can Faith in my clan stop rallying cry? can i play Faith in my clan no matter which army my champion is in?

If there is a Clan Champion from your Faction anywhere, in any of your armies, at any time, you may play Faith In My Clan to cancel any action, including Reactions.

Also if i have Yoritomo Soetsuko in a battle and use her reaction against a block supply line does the personality go home but unbowed?

Correct. Only the bowing is negated (and only of someone else played the Block Supply Lines -- if you played it on yourself, you can't use Soetsuko).

Does the Same go for strong guard?

No. Strong Guard negates your movement home.

Rules Question (JEFF)

Hi Jeff, Here's an interesting one for you. According to a couple of the sites I've looked at, Rich Wulf has apparently said that players can declare Daigotsu as their wind in storyline events. My question is: Is this considered to be playing a wind for Play purposes (ie. events like Kaneka's Blockade, the Shogun's Fealty) or will it merely be considered for storyline implications.

It's just a storyline thing. Mechanically, you have no Wind.

Also, I've been puzzling over your response to my question on "taking" an action versus "performing" an action (it originally came up in regard to the "Scorpion Distractor" and whether or not the personality who bowed to pay for the distractor was "taking" a political action, you ruled not). I accept your ruling that "taking" and "performing" are not synonymous however I feel that it does make things more difficult for players. There are no problems with cards that refer to when a personality "performs" an action as the definition of "performing" an action is well laid out in the rules. "Taking" an action is defined nowhere, however, and this means that any card that refers to "taking" an action becomes questionable. My assumption, based on your previous response, is that personalities are only considered to be "taking" actions if the action they are performing is printed on their card. I'm not entirely happy with that definition though and would like some better guidelines if possible.

If I could go back in time and set down strict guidelines as to what words we're going to use when, I would. That said, since the majority of the cards that use "perform", "take", and "play" ALMOST interchangably are pre-Gold Edition, you're still going to find oddities if you go with the straightforward definition you propose (which I admit matches my preferred definition).

Rekai vs. Slaughter the Scout

Scenario: Lone defender with 3 Force or less defends province X. Rekai moves in & shoots at him, which would kill him. Can the defender play Slaughter the Scout,

Yes.

and if so, what happens?

Slaughter the Scout would kill Rekai's unit, then Rekai's ranged attack would still occur [DA rulebook p. 45] and kill the defender.

It would seem as though he could as Reactions can be played to a Personality's own death (e.g. The Final Breath).

The reason it's legal is that Rekai moves first, then shoots, and Slaughter the Scout is a Reaction to the movement.

More Face Me Questions

Ive got a personality with 4 chi and 3 personal honor. My opponent has a personality with 3 chi 0 personal honor and a naganita (bringing his chi to a 5). He challanges my person to a chi based dual and I respond with Face Me!. Does his person die because his personal honor is a 0 or is he dualing with a 2 (from the naganita bonus)?

His Chi is 5 and his Personal Honor is 0. Face Me! switches those, setting Chi to 0 and Personal Honor to 5. [p. 32] The challenging Personality dies instantly and the duel ends without resolution.
