Jeff Alexander, sent 19 July 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

A Mantis with Honor?!

The one thing that gets me is the ability...

Can you grab a face up Dynasty card from the discard pile...your opponent's Dynasty cards from his provinces if they're face up...another card face up in your own provinces? All of these?

No. Just from your deck, which is where all empty Provinces get refilled from.

post for 17 July 2002 (Zen and Jeff)

If I'm using Honor's Lesson Dojo and the action I take is canceled do I get to take another action?

Jeffsama and Zensama are not on the exact same page on this. Jeff says no and Zen says yes. Can you two work this out and give us a resolution please.

It's pretty simple. If Zen and I disagree, go with the ruling I made. Zen is a wonderful chap, but I'm afraid he's strictly below me in the Ruling Heirarchy.

So, er, the following is a way to gain infinite honour, right? Bring Oni no Pekkle nonexp into play. Tattoo her with either Iron Mountain or the card Tattooed. Attach a Corrupt Jade Sliver. Give her a Crane Tattoo. Use the Corrupt Jade Sliver to kill her (not a targetted action).

As pointed out, it does under Gold Edition rules.

She dies.

And you lose 10 Honor.

She comes back into play because of the Crane Tattoo; gain 3 honour because of her entering play effect and then she dies again. Repeat as required.

It can't use the Crane Tattoo's reaction the second time because it is not in the current battle when it dies.

Crane Tattoo Loop (Was: RE: [L5R-CCG] post for 17 July 2002)

However, the quandary is still there. Forget Pekkle for the moment. By Jeff's ruling, ANY personality with a Crane Tattoo who dies in battle/duel due to chi-death will go into an infinite death-loop. That's really the crux of the matter.

No, because 1) the Crane Tattoo's reaction is only usable if the Personality died in the current battle, and 2) its reaction, like all reactions, is voluntary -- it doesn't *have* to be used.

Instead of Pekkle, let's make it Shinjo Yasamura experienced. Whenever he enters play, you draw a fate card. Crane Tattoo, chi-death; Voila! You entire fate deck goes into your hand. Who needs a card drawing engine?

See point #1 above.

Action/Reaction [Question]

Hi all, just a couple of questions for the team. As scheming as I am.. I have a couple of terrain questions, which probably have been answered before..

Reading the response previously from DW about Snowy Fields, and that reactions do count towards the action count, got me thinking about Deadly Ground. If for whatever reason, I drop Deadly Ground in my action, can either/any player play a reaction off of that if it does not destroy the terrain?

Not if they're played after Deadly Ground resolves, no. This makes it impossible, under normal circumstances, to nail it with One Life, One Action, for instance.

My opponent plays Superior Tactics or Diversionary Tactics in hopes of destroying the terrain, (or using Oracle of Earth), can I use Know the Enemy/Faith in my Clan, to stop him from playing the SupTac/DivTac?

Absolutely not.

Different question/scenario.

Terrain: Three Stone River. If it doesn't exclusively state the terrain is Immediate or Delayed, then it's Delayed, right?

Correct. Gold Edition+ rulebook, p. 4.

If Three Stone River is played in a battle, and a personality has a 0F follower only, then they reduce the personalities force to 0F?

Correct.

If a follower is bowed on a personality, the follower still has a force of say 4, but doesn't contribute to the unit. Is the force of the personality reduced to 4F or 0F (bowed follower). I think 4F, just verifying.

4. You care about the Force of the individual Follower card here.

More on the Immediate Terrain questions: As with Three Stone River (if its immediate)

It's not.

Break the Wave (-3F to followers). Now all followers are immediately -3F. If I move a personality into the battle, that gives +1F to all followers in the army, are the Followers going to get the bonus of +1F?

Yes.

(If say I had all 1F followers to begin with. And Break the Wave comes in. -3F is now 0F. Move in the army taskmaster, and they all gain +1F. Is it 1F -3F +1F, 0F. Or is it 1F. -3F makes 0F. +1F makes 1F.)

1 - 3 + 1, for a final result of 0 due to the minimum value rule.
