Deeds, Not Words Question

What happens if I target my opponent with Deeds, then I gain honor from a Iaijutsu Challenge and I redirect the honor to my opponent? Does he lose the honor or is it considered that he/she wins the honor from a duel?

Under the Gold Edition wording of Deeds, Not Words, that gain would become a loss because it is not a gain from one of your opponent's OWN Personalities winning a duel. (The previous wording of Deeds allowed any gain from winning a duel to go unreversed.)

post for 30 May 2002 / Uso+Strike of the Flowing Water

...Dragon then strikes and (DOUBLE CHI)Crane responds with a Bend Like a Reed smiles and flips over his focused cards and proudly announces a total of 42 (20+5+5+5+5+2)...

But: Bend Like a Reed ( from Legend of the Five Rings Rules Archive.htm) -When played for effect, the bonus of 2 is changed by effects that alter the focus values of cards played "in a duel" (e.g., the DOUBLE CHI TRAIT, Toshimoko Sensei). The bonus of 2 is not altered by effects that have already changed the card's actual focus value (e.g., Touch of Amaterasu). [Partial REVERSAL, 2/6/2000]

... then the total is 44 (20 + 2*(5+5+2)) no??

Sorry. The original poster never mentioned that his Kurohito was the Experienced one, so I missed that he had Double Chi. I was more concerned with figuring out the Uso's total.

You're right, Kurohito would get the 2C bonus from Bend Like a Reed twice.

(Even if Draw From Within worked the way he obviously wanted it to, when YOU strike, he'd still only have 39.)

Now forgive me if I'm wrong, but this is incorrect, since the if his oppoenent struck, the DFW would go up to 6, then SoFW would double it to 12, giving us (with the Double Chi trait):

Here's the crucial distinction you're missing:

Strike of Flowing Water doubles the focus value of the next card focused as soon as it's focused, whereas Draw From Within doesn't change its own focus until a strike is called. There are no retroactive adjustments going on here.

questions, always questions

Range attack: 1- May I raise a Ikiryo's range attack with Arrows from the wood? (to a pers. with followers)

Sure. The Reaction on Arrows From the Woods is not a separate ranged attack that you combine like it's a single-use Spearmen, it's a direct change to another ranged attack's strength.

2- May I combine a Ikiryo's range attack with other 'normal' range attack ?

Yes, but only if both are shooting at the same thing. [DA rulebook p. 63] Most ranged attacks will not be able to combine with the Ikiryo if the Ikiryo is shooting past Followers...if they want to combine, they need to be able to do that themselves as well.

3- And The arrow knows the way + Arrows from the wood?

The Arrow Knows the Way and Arrows From the Woods's Reaction may both be played on a single or combined ranged attack that comes, wholly or partially, from a Personality with more than 2 Chi.

The Arrow Knows the Way cannot be used on Arrows From the Wood's Battle action.

4- And The arrow knows the way + other 'normal' range attack ?

I'm not sure what you mean here. The Arrow Knows the Way specifically allows you, in its Gold Edition wording, to target past Followers with a combined ranged attack even if some of the individual attacks within it can't do that, just as long as ONE of them is coming from the Personality and his Chi is high enough. This is a case of a card overriding a general rule.

5- May I combine a Ikiryo's range attack with other from (his personality + The arrow knows the way)?

Yes.

6- May I combine 2 Ikiryo's?

Yes.

7- ...other possibilities??

Generally, each individual attack has to figure out its own way of shooting at your intended target. [p. 53]

Naval Invasion: May an attacking player with Scout play a terrain before the first action of a naval defending player?

No. [DA rulebook p. 66, third bullet]

I don't understand this Rule: 'You cannot combine a ranged attack on an Item with one on the Personality carrying it if the Personality has to bow to make the ranged attack.' This is applied only to items like Jade Bow (the Personality has to bow to make the ranged attack OF THE ITEM) or it affects all items (like Fox Nagamaki + Tsuruchi)?

Only to items like the Jade Bow.

Crossroad + Shiro Ide: If a 3 cost gold producing holding comes into play from a Crossroad (reduced to 0), then the holding produce 1 additional Gold when bowed to produce Gold for a Cavalry card for a Shiro Ide player?

Yes. The Holding's cost is only reduced while it's in the Province with the Crossroads. Once it's in play, its Gold cost returns to normal, allowing Shiro Ide to affect it.

Moto Chagatai (Exp.): Reaction: Once per turn, when another player moves a unit into or out of the current battle, move one of your Unicorn Clan Personalities into the current battle from any location or from the current battle to another Province.

1- May use his reaction is he is out of the current battle?

Yes. He does not specify "this battle", like Bayushi Paneki Exp.

2- The text doesn't reffer to '...another player moves ONE OF HIS units...'. Then if a player removes one of MY personalities from battle (with Tsudao-imperial favor for example), may I use the reaction??

Yes. That's what the card says.

I am attacking with a Personality and have another Personality at home, and the second has an Armor of Sun-Tao attached. Can I play the Terrain stored under it in the battle where the first Personality is attacking?

No.

Uh, why does the armor need to be in the battle?

Because there is a crucial omission in the Gold Edition wording of this card which has just come to light. I've just posted errata for it.

post for 30 May 2002

if I read correctly aka mizu umi says: Any Event that is about to destroy this Province has all of its effects negated. The Event is still considered to have been resolved.

So When the Doom of the Dark Lord tries to destroy the region, the event is negated. It affects nothing more . Completely, since ALL his effects are negated. The Doom has been resolved (Another Doom event that flips in a province will have no effect) but the present one is gone. Why "until en of turn" or "my province is saved, but yours will be destroyed"?. Just "Why I am saved by my region but my opponent not, if all effects are negated"?

I know there is a ruling with Defenders of the Realm, but is because Defedners says no provincies are distroyed this turn.

It doesn't say "No Provinces are destroyed this turn," it just says "No Provinces are destroyed." But I see your point. The two cards are not nearly as much alike as I'd first believed.

Aka Mizu-Umi will negate all effects of any Event that tries to destroy its Province, even ongoing ones. This is a REVERSAL.

sideboard q

I have been hearing the sideboard rule thrown around the list in the past week or two. I have checked Deathseeker and accumulated rulings and have found little to no solid rulings on them? Are they legal? I read that it was similar to the system of Magic but if someone could please fill in some of the gaps it would be much appreciated.

They're in the tournament guidelines. Take a look through http://l5r.alderac.com/ccg/code_of_bushido.html .

Question

Hida Kosho: Crab Clan Samurai Yu 5 Battle: Once per battle, challenge an attacking Personality to a duel of Force. The challenged Personality may refuse by going home bowed. Bow the loser.

A Test of Courage: Reaction: Play this card when an action is moving one of your target Personalities out of battle. Cancel the action. You cannot bow the Personality to take actions or target the Personality with actions until after the turn.

So can I refuse the challenge, which sends me home then play ëA Test of Courageí to cancel me being sent home?

My initial take on this issue is that, as worded, going home is a cost, not an effect. Only the effects of an action are what it "does", so Kosho's action isn't moving your Personality from the battle. But I'll see what the Rules Team has to say.

Mujina Gang Question

Mujina Gang: Creature * Cavalry * Lose 3 Honor. After Mujina Gang attaches to a Personality, you must discard one card attached to the Personality.

Is the card you discard destroyed or discarded?

The card says "discard", so it is only discarded, not destroyed.

Some questions

Some questions:

Are regions and fortifications "cards in a battle". Can they be destroyed by the 12th black scroll? Or are just units the "cards in a battle"?

Yes, yes, no.

If a player with Towers of Asako bows a shuegnja to cancel my block supply lines, and i play Fall on your knees, is the guy sent home or can he bow another shugenja to re-cancel my action?

He can bow another shugenja to re-cancel it.

If a Kisada´s funeral happens, then a unavoidable destiny, then a death of the ki-rin, adn the revaling the bastard, what happens?

Until the end of the game, no player may achieve an Honor Victory unless they have destroyed a province in battle, or have at least one Elemental Ring in play.

Until the beginning of your turn two turns from now, Events may not be canceled, nor their effects negated, by cards or Strongholds.

Until the end of the game, players may not win a military victory unless they have at least 10 honor or have one Elemental Ring in play. This player may not destroy any opponent's last province in battle, and his events that would destroy the province are canceled without effect. This will not prevent a player from losing due to his own card effects. This event does not affect clans normally unable to win an Honor Victory.

Remove all Discard Piles from the game. Cancel all coninuing event effects. No events are considered to have resolved during this game.

a) Kisada is negated by the revealing, because is not protected by the unavoidable. b) Kisada, unavoidable and death are negated by ervealing c) unavoidable cancels the revealign d) Jeff´s wise answer.

c)

rulling question

I had a rulling discussion on a gempukku ladder, about a test of courage and testuya sensei. as per the new wording, cancels the sensei action and NOBODY goes home right?

Right. You also don't permanently lose Province strength. But you still lose your Sensei and your Stronghold is still bowed, because those were costs.

Best of 3 format

The best-of-three matches are our first attempt at addressing an issue many players apparently feel is a shortcoming of the existing pairing format.

Best of 3 seems like a great idea in principle but how is it being implemented? Getting a Swiss tournament properly run is very often difficult with time constraints of store or convention hours or the other commitments of players. I assume MtG games tend to be shorter (I've never played it) but the 45 minute per game time limit is still appropriate for L5R......certainly most games don't reach 45 minutes but some (and often the best and hardest fought) do stretch to time, especially in Gold. With best of 3 that's over 2 hours per round! Are best of 3 formats just being used for the finals?

You got it. Three-game matches throughout the preliminaries as well would drastically increase the length of the tournament.
