Rules for 28 April 2002
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Greetings,
Hantei Sensei v. Item [Jeff]
Suppose my opponent uses the Hantei Sensei and names my Celestial Sword of the Mantis. Later in the game I pull Forgotten Lesson and I make his Sensei not effect play until the end of my turn. I go ahead and attach my Celestial Sword of the Mantis. What happens to my sword when Forgotten Lesson wear's off?
That's a "Triple A" question: "Asked. Answered. Archived."
Under Hantei Sensei: "Its ability does not affect cards already in play. [DW]"
post for 26 April 2002
If I target a shadowlands player, all of their Gold Legal strongholds say they can't gain or lose honor, do they have to discard the fate cards?
Nope. They can choose to lose the 3-9 honor, and their stronghold immediately cancels it.
[Sing song voice] You didn't cheeeck the Aaaarchiiiiiive... :)
Under Bitter Vengeance: "One of the two effects must happen if possible. I.e., a player who cannot lose honor must discard Fate cards. [JA, e-mail, 25 April 2002]"
Many Garrison Questions
Can you play Stand Against the Waves or Wall of Steel in a battle where you have no personalities, but do have a card like Garrison that counts as a unit?
No, because the Garrison does not meet the requirements for those actions. Unless you know how to put Followers or Weapons on the Garrison so you can legally play those actions.
If you had a personality with a follower defending at a battle with a garrison, and you played Stand, would one or two opposing units without followers have to bow?
One.
Does having a garrison at a province count as assigning a unit in regards to Defend Yourself?
No.
Is an attacking force versus a Garrison considered to be opposed (for Oni no Tsuburu, among others).
No.
Does destroying a province with a garrison count as destroying an army for the purposes of Prepared For the Enemy, Ikoma Sume, etc?
No.
Lastly, can you play Power of Nothing at a battle where you have a Garrison?
No.
Read closely: "you are always considered to have a defensive unit at this Province *for the purpose of being able to perform an action during battle*."
The *only* time the Garrison matters is that instant where you ask, "Do I have a unit so I can play an action in the battle?" It "vanishes" at all other times.
quick RULES question
Can you use [Shrine of the Evening Star] to bring back one of your unique personalities if another player has that same unique person in play?
No. There's a Uniqueness conflict.
Clarification on Shiryo no Taisa
If i am the attacker, and Taisa's personality is in the battle, and the defender either uses fall on your knees on my Sneak or the Lion Terrain Buster reaction on my Deadly Ground, can Taisa cancel these reactions?
Jeff Alexander will have to check this answer, but I think so. (I say, "think", because we've been having some discussons in the Rules Junta about the interpretation of "before the Defender's first action.")
Speed of the Waterfall question
If I use Speed of the Waterfall, does that re-straighten even cards I voluntarily bowed for effects?
That what the card says.
One extra name I forgot to mention on my "Signed Time of the Void" cards list: Mirumoto Hitomi is signed by Matt Staroscik.
