More on bowed-card things that no longer work

The only thing I can think of is that the designers wanted to kill the Phoenix military deck that involved a Samurai, Clan Sword and Shiba House Guard attacking every turn and then being completely protected by the shuggies.

Remember what I said last week about rulings not being based on tournament Clan standings?

And you can't use your card effects that trigger for destroyed personalities (Duty to the Clan, Be Prepared To Dig Two Graves, etc.). In Open, Kakita Shijin cannot write poems about dead people if they were bowed when they died.

He always could and still can, regardless of whether this ruling was kept. Shijin reacts after the Personality dies. [card text] Dead cards are not considered bowed. [DA rulebook p. 61]

Random Questions from the Archive.

Yogo Asami : Her action is legal during a battle she is not in if all of the targeted player's Personalities are in the current battle. [REVERSAL, JA, 18 April 2001] Just to clarify, soes this mean ALL the players personalities, or all their straight personalities?

All the Personalities that can be selected for Asami to bow, which is typically only the straight ones.

Shinsei's Shrine Takes precedence over Plains of Otosan Uchi if they both end up on the same Province. [DW, e-mail, 19 February 1998] Seemed to remember a question about this earlier, I am curious how they would both end up in the same province.

There are card combinations that can achieve this.

The Eternal Halls of Shiba : May retrieve Kiho Terrains immediately following their destruction. [2/5/2000] When are non-destroyed kiho-terrains retrieved?

They can't be. Note that Terrains now count as "destroyed" when they go away at the end of the battle, so it's very hard for a Terrain to get successfully played and not be destroyed.

The Kitsu Tombs : Oni no Kamu's self-destruction after three turns will not be prevented with the Stronghold, because it is not an effect of coming into play; it's simply a duration. [ZF, November 1999] I'm assuming his bowing of the stronghold can be canceled, though?

Correct. But not his preventing it from straightening, since that's a continual effect and not an entering-play effect.

If a non-Yogo Towers player copies (e.g., Egg of P'an Ku) or takes control of (e.g., Kolat Master) your Scorpion personality, the personality lacks, or loses, the ability. [ZF, March 2000] To clarify, what about if a Yogo player takes control of another player's Scorpion clan personality?

It would gain the ability while under the Yogo player's control.

Hida Yakamo (Experienced 2) : Is considered an allied unit after using his ability to enter a battle, even if he wasn't invited. So in a multi-player, if a person declares an attack, invites no allies, and sends no-one, so the defender can do some tricks, and he enters, can he play that action that will cause the attacker an honor loss?

I need to know which "that action" you're talking about.

Hitomi (Experienced 3): If she defeats a Personality who will not join your clan, all other duel results happen except the transfer of control. [DW, 8/3/98] Does the defeated personailty go to the fief of his controller, or stay at the battle?

It would stay at the battle since it can't be moved into Hitomi's fief when it's not controlled by Hitomi's player.

On: Hitomi

Unexpected Allies : Effects that happen "when" a card is brought into play are prevented. Non-gold costs are not waived. If you are unwilling or unable to pay, the Personality goes back to the top of your Dynasty deck. If a revealed Personality cannot be put into play legally (e.g., due to Uniqueness conflicts), he or she is discarded. [VRD, 3 May 2001] These two statements seem to be incompatable. Please clarify.

Based on the MRP, the card is "revealed" but never drawn or put anywhere. It would stay on top in both instances.

Asako Misao : Reads, "Asako Misao 1F/3C 1HR 5G 2PH Phoenix Clan Shugenja. Limited: Bow Misao and one of your Personalities with the Ninja, Shadowlands, or Bloodspeaker trait to permanently remove the Ninja, Shadowlands, or Bloodspeaker trait from the Personality." [MRP, Gold Edition, 1 July 2001] If they have multiple traits, does he only remove one, or all of them?

One of your choice.

Just to be sure, if I use the ability on Shiro Matsu, I can still use Akodo Ginawa's ability? It goes one way, but not the other, right?

Right. Ginawa prohibits attacking only after his ability is used.

Cancelling actions on bowed personalities [Jeff]

Jeffsama,

This is a question about Witch Hunt. Say an opponent targets one of your bowed personalities with Touch of Death. With your new ruling (new ruling written below) can Witch Hunt be played. Relavent Text of Witch Hunt: Reaction: Play this card when a Kiho or Spell is cast. One of your Shugenja issues an unrefusable challenge to the caster. If your Shugenja wins, cancel the Kiho or Spell. (Either way, destroy the loser.)

Yes.

Another question. Say an opposing player has her Scorpion Shugenja with Secrets on the Winds target and dishonor one of your bowed personalities can you play Fires of Retribution to destroy the spell Secrets on the Winds? Fires of Retribution reads: Elemental Reaction: After a Spell creates a Spell effect, destroy the Spell. Elemental Reaction: After a Shugenja uses an innate ability, lower the Shugenja's Chi by 2.

Yes.

quick little rules question...

this came up in a game so I want to make sure I figured it out right.

playing an Iajutsu Duel on my opponents personality. He has 2 Moetechi in play and they are both unbowed. Can he bow both in response to his personality entering the duel?

Yes.

I did look in the rule book and it states.... All players may react to the same trigger in turn until everybody passes consecutively. You may react as many times as you like to any trigger, but remember that you can't take your second Reaction until everyone else has had a chance to take one, and that sometimes a Reaction changes the trigger in such a way that further Reactions aren't legal. Also, each printed instance of a Reaction can be used only once per trigger. Moetechi reads as follows... Unaligned Elemental Terror. Fire Oni. Nonhuman. Shadowlands. Lose 4 Honor. Moetechi cannot attach Followers or Items. Elemental Reaction: When one of your Personalities is entering a duel, bow Moetechi and lose Honor equal to Meotechi's Chi. The Personality gains Chi equal to Moetechi's Chi until the duel ends. If I read the rules right, printed means ANY reaction on any type of card can only be used once. Meaning... only 1 poisoned weapon per duel, only one Arrows from the woods, only one of the Moetechi's could react to the personality being dueled correct????

No. Two reactions on two different cards are two different printed reactions, even if they have identical wording to one another. Think in terms of the actual dried ink.

Face Me! (Higatsuku)

Face Me question If I play face me against a 0 ph personality his chi becomes 0 and dies or not?

His Chi becomes 0, which kills him.

Sup Tacts question

My oponent controls prov A and B I atack prov A with my 8 force unit and he defends I decide to solve B prov first can I move my unit in prov A with a sup tacts to prov B with my first battle action in prov B after my oponent pass?

Absolutely. You are satisfying the Rule of Relevance by adding something to the battle and satisfying the Rule of Presence by adding something *of yours* to the battle.

Cancelling actions on bowed personalities [Jeff]

Arrows from the Woods targets a Ranged Attack, not the victim or the card producing the Ranged Attack.

Fine. Agree.

The Turtle's Shell targets a Ranged Attack, and the card you choose to perform the Turtle's Shell.

Disagree. It's like Arrows from the Woods.

Flee the Darkness targets the Shugenja performing the Kiho action and the Open or Battle action it is canceling.

Agree.

On a slightly different tangent, I also think this classification of actions ties in with the Ranged Attack / Item issue. Bows don't generally shoot themselves. The need to be USED by their wielder. Hence, Matsu Domotai (subject) makes an attack by means of Fox Nagamaki (means) against Ikoma sume (direct object). All 3 cards here are targeted.

Incorrect. "Deciding which among several different actions to use or play is not a targeting decision." [DA rulebook p. 46] You aren't targeting a Follower, Item, Personality, etc. just by deciding to use an action on it instead of an action on one of your other cards. The only thing targeted in this example is Ikoma Sume.

Consequently, Domotai needs to be unbowed to use the Nagamaki, even those it doesn't bow him.

Not true. The action is not on Domotai's card.
