replies to 15-20 July

Jeff Alexander, sent 26 July 2001 to the l5r-useful list, L5RINFO

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

RallyRe: [L5RINFO] Rules for 15 July 2001

So the correct wording with interpretation for Rallying Cry would be:

Reaction: Play after a battles resolution. Straighten any personalities that were bowed by the combat as if they had never bowed.

They don't bow and then straighten. Not even a little. They never bow in the first place.

Akasha question

From the card we see that Akasha is human, but is she also considered a Naga card because of the trait "Legacy of the Naga"?

Yes.

On: Akasha
Tomo questions

Isawa Tomo (1/3 5|8|2) Phoenix Clan Shugenja. Master of Water. Battle Elemental: Bow this card to move a unit from one Province to another. (Clarification: Moves units between Defender's Provinces only.)

Just something I wanted to resolve.

Firstly does the rule of presence come into effect when moving someone elses personality into the battle.

No. Relevance, yes, but not Presence. Remember, you need both. It's legal to move someone else's unit into a battle if and only if you've satisfied Presence some other way, which means you can only do it if you have someone there already. The only legal use of Tomo when you have no units is to move one of your OWN in.

Secondly can a personality take an action at a battle he is not present at and which he is not moving himself into.

Yes, under some circumstances. If you satisfy Presence, and you satisfy Relevance, and you don't contradict any "opposint" or "this battle" phrasing, it's legal.

Tomo questions

If it is possible to perform an action, ANY action that moves ANY unit into a battle is ALWAYS a legal battle action.

Incorrect. An action is legal if it moves one of your OWN units into the current battle. If you have no one there, moving someone else's in isn't good enough.

rules for ancestors - rulings needed

Rules for using the Force and Chi of Ancestors seem to be missing from the GE rulebook.

They add like Followers.

Do special restriction for attaching Followers (e.g. Otako Kamako) still apply to Ancestors?

No.

replies to July 3-5

Since Darks Lord´s Favor can "Reaction: Reduce one Honor gain to zero. " that means it´s a Political Action, and by that The Shadolands Horde couldn´t play it?

By ruling, only that one action is Political, and the Horde can play it for one if its other three effects. It's bending the rules a little, but this card was *made* for the Horde to use and without this ruling, they can't.

New targetting rules -- more messiness

But did anyone notice this change?

"You may not target your bowed personalities with YOUR actions." (second YOUR added)

This has a couple of major implications. For one, you can (in fact, must if everyone is bowed) choose a bowed personality to stay for someone else's Encircled Terrain.

Unintended. I'm going to check whether we want to keep the change.

For another, it means that Yogo Asami becomes near-useless, since a player can target one of his or her bowed personalities with the effect.

Hardly. You can't bow a bowed Personality. That's wanking in the first degree.

Poison Dartgun question

a.. The ranged attack originates from the Dartgun, not the Personality. It may be combined with other Dartguns or a ranged attack from the Personality. [DW, e-mail, 19 February 1999] Now, the questions.

Does this mean that if the personality is capable of producing a ranged attack, the personality can use the dartgun to increase the attack and allow him/her to "shoot past" followers?

No. If card A can shoot at card X but card B cannot, then cards A and B cannot make a combined attack at card X. I'm honestly a little surprised this needs to be pointed out in a dedicated ruling, but from the frequency with which this issue arises, it obviously does.

What if the personality has followers capable of creating ranged attacks, how do these combine with the dartgun? Thanks for any help.

Attacks from the Dartgun may, in general, be combined with attacks from Followers just as easily as multiple Followers may combine.

Yojiro Question

Hello all again, Bayushi Yojiro's new wording states that he only provides +1 personal honor to personalities that are under your control, and no longer provides the bonus to all of your scorpion personalities. So, here is the question. When exactly do you gain honor for playing an aligned personality at full price? If you gain it as you play the personality, than the bonus does not yet apply and you don't get any extra honor.

You don't get any extra honor.

Age Does Matter[Brand]

Spirit Wars are 30 years? Correct?

Gold story arc starts 20 years after Spirit Wars.

Gold arc starts 20-25 years after the Hidden Emperor arc ends. The Spirit Wars take place inside that gap somewhere.

Rules for July 18th

In a message dated 01-07-18 05:37:26 EDT, the splendiferous Vaughn wrote:

<< Something that reacts to a trigger event (Counterattack, The Wind's Truth, The Emperor's Left Hand) probably doesn't target.

Okay, I'll be the first to admit that the new targeting rules are still more than a bit unclear to me, but I don't see how this can be true. Don't all these fall under the "All other effects target" clause? (TWT in particular always *has* targeted, to my knowledge, since you had to target a player to redirect the honor to...) In each case, it's likely to be a targeted player, not card in play, and therefore likely irrelevant, but it seems to me that Targeting Rule #4 should apply. Can you explain (in small words, please <grin>) why it doesn't?

The Junta is going to have to discuss this one a little. Sometimes it seems like there's nothing *to* target. I need to find out from Dave how Doomtown handles these, since its targeting rules were the basis of Gold's.

While I'm here, I have another question of my own. Is a Personality in play when they are being paid for, and therefore able to take reactions (that are legal, anyway)? For example, if I were to use corrupt gold to buy Goshiu (or Kaukatsu, if you prefer), could I immediately copy the honor loss to an opponent?

Costs must be fully generated before the card can enter play. Goshiu could not copy the losses in your example.

Rules for July 18th

I still need to know, for certain, if Shosuro Technique's Reaction can be used in Gold on a bowed Personality or a Personality that is bowing as it enters a duel.

Then the question becomes: Does it target the card creating the duel, your personality entering the duel, or both?

Your personality entering the duel.

Question about "The Keyword Rule"

I have a quick question about Nemesis and Be Prepared to Dig Two Graves and their interaction with the Keyword Rule (pg 33 Gold Rulebook).

When you have used the above actions and targeted "a Personality" your opponent controls do all copies of that personality then trigger the secondary effects of the cards mentioned.

In other words does use of Nemesis or Be Prepared to Dig Two Graves create a situation were a Personalities name becomes a Keyword for the purposes of looking for it?

Or do those two cards only interact with a single copy of the personality?

The single copy.

Rules for

Does One Life, One Action target the card it is played upon. (My guess: yes)

I'm going to say that no, OLOA doesn't target.

Sorry, Vaughn. It does.

Is the Gold Edition card "Deathseeker Technique" the same or a different card than the similarly but not identically named Soul of the Empire card "Death-Seeker Technique"?

Same card. Hyphenated words count the same as a non-hyphenated version of the same word. Page 33, Gold rulebook.

Right answer, wrong reason. That rule says you can't use the parts of a hyphenated word as individual keywords.

This card was renamed as a stylistic fix.

(jeff) Rules Q

Can I use the alliance event to name "shadowlands horde" as the allied clan?

Yes.

If I am using the spwaning grounds it is legal to use alliance? But not legal for shadowlands horde correct?

Both those rulings stopped being current months ago. They were just too "common sense"-based and didn't fit in with the New World Order of reading cards literally wherever feasible.

Lastly using shadowlands horde or spawning is it legal to make use of the events imperial funeral, or dealing with shadows? The wording on funeral has changed, and I was wondering if it affected the legality (ie if they have a bowed card, or shadowlands card is it an unconditional loss?)

As both are Events, they are utterly unaffected by any restrictions on taking *actions* that cause unconditional honor losses.

Several Important Questions

4. Can I play Daidoji Hachi as Daidoji Hachi or must I play him as Yasuki Hachi?

Daidoji Hachi and Yasuki Hachi are both Gold-legal cards. The "Soul of..." proxy rule does not apply. You MUST play them as written. You may not have more than three Hachis in your deck, total, by the wording on Yasuki Hachi. Yasuki Hachi does not get the Honor Requirement reduction from the Iron Fortress.

Rules for [Jeff/Vaughn]

Here's another one: Does The Wind's Truth target the player that is gaining/losing Honor in the first place?

No.

Am I correct that you can no longer restore Dishonorable Dead Personalities to honorable status, when you are playing the Hantei Wind?

You are correct. There just wasn't room.

Kaede's Tears - Ruling needed

Gold Edition wording: Kiho Limited: Target a Unique Personality in your discard pile. Bow one of your Shugenja with Chi greater than or equal to the Personality's Chi and remove this card from the game to shuffle this Personality into your Dynasty deck.

Does this MRP change the permanent removal of Kaede's Tears from the game to be a cost?

Yes. Isn't consistancy wonderful?

A Glimpse of the Soul's Shadow - ruling needed

Gold Edition wording: Kiho Battle: Bow one of your Shugenja in this battle for Fear equal to his or her Chi.

Does this MRP make it no longer usable by Monks?

Apparently.

Couple of rules questions

Greetings,

Question 1) Suppose my opponent attacks with two personalities and I defend with one I Block Supply Lines on personality A and he responds with Test of Courage. He passes. I then play Stand Against the Waves. Can he choose to bow the personality that was Tested? (In other words, is selection of a personality to bow from *my* Stand counted as targeting with an action)

It is counted. He can't select that Personality. But don't forget that if he can't target the required number of Personalities, SAtW then creates a non-targeted effect which bows all of them.

Question 2) In Time of War has gone off. My opponent gains 2 honor and then attaches the Imperial Standard. I have a 3 chi shugenja. Using a Wind's Truth, can I get the 3 honor that he would get from the Imperial Standard or am I limited by the fact that he gains 4, but only 3 gets added to his honor? (I hope this questions makes sense)

You get the gain he would have gotten, which is 3.
