Unit Targeting vs Champion of Thunder

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hello! I searched and could not find a similar topic so I dare ask.

Everything is pretty clear with use of CoT's reaction against single-target effects. But what if the effect targets the unit? The rules say that a unit-targeting effect targets every card in the unit simultaneously. Am I right to understand that it is a number of separate effects? If so, do I have to choose which of the cards in my unit I am going to protect with the reaction? If I protect one of the cards, will the other cards in the unit still be affected?

Champion of Thunder Reaction: After another player's action targets a card in this unit: Negate the action's effects on this card.

Moto Naleesh (for example) Battle: Target an enemy unit: Naleesh overruns it. Bow it. Destroy all cards in it without attachments and without Cavalry.
