Fukuzo and temporary abilities

L5R CCG Rules board, 3 April 2012 to 4 April 2012

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Let's say there is an strategy that gives your guy a ability until the end of the turn (totally unrelated to any cards previewed today on the main site ). What happens if Fukuzo -exp removes that guy with it's ability?

a) Can Fukuzo's ability copy it (it says 'from', so, not sure)?

If it does, what is the duration of that ability ON Fukuzo: b) Until Fukuzo uses it's own Open ability again. c) Until the end of the turn.

Relevant text Open: Remove a target Personality in any player's discard pile from the game: Fukuzo wears his skin. Until the next time this game this ability is used, Fukuzo copies one keyword, and one ability that does not itself copy abilities, from the Personality.

Thanks guys!

Why, surely you must be asking about Extensive Training? Ahem...

a) Yes, Fukuzo may copy a granted ability.

and if he... she... it does so, the duration of the copy is "b)".

How does this work with the definition of from and on not being the same anymore?

From Some things check to see if costs, effects, actions, targeting, or other game procedures come “from” a given source. The source is the card that the effect, action or targeting is printed on, or the rulebook if it is printed there. There are three exceptions: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_F

On An ability, a trait or a keyword on a card is one either printed on the card, or granted to it by some effect. Abilities granted to a player by cards or the rulebook are "on" the player, but come "from" their card or rulebook source. See From. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_O

If the ability has to be from the targeted personality does it not have to be printed on the card. Or is from in this case just used in it's common english meaning and not in it's rulebook defined meaning?

You omitted Exception #3 under the definition of "from", which fits this case exactly (emphasis mine):

"3. Costs and effects of traits and abilities given to other cards, copied from other cards, or on created cards, come from the card they are currently on."
