Koshin Keep + Once per turn ranged ability

L5R CCG Rules board, 23 March 2012 to 3 April 2012

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I am completely confused by Koshin Keep. Can someone clarify it for me by answering the following questions:

1) Does Koshin Keep's ability to use an additional ranged attack occur immediately after the first one? In other words, does the opponent get a chance to respond in between ranged attacks?

2) Does the ability allow a single unit to attack twice? Say I have Tsuruchi Saya with Ranged 5. Can she take two attacks with Koshin Keep? Or does the Keep merely allow you to use two ranged attack abilities from different sources?

I ran a search and most questions doesn't seem to cover this.

Assuming I have Shikaro with Gift armor attacking a province. I’m running Koshin Keep and my opponent blocks with Kuronada Xp.

If I ranged attack to Kuronada, he didn’t die, so I reduce his force by 4. So now, how does the stronghold trigger? a) Shikaro shoots again with his ability of ranged 4 to kill Kuronada. b) I need to perform another ranged attack ability to shoot Kuronada since Shikaro has used his once per turn ranged ability. So I must use another ranged such as Siege Volley from hand.

Assuming scenario (a) is the answer, with a bigger force guy, let’s say 12F, does this mean that the Stronghold will allow me to trigger Shikaro’s again and again until that 12F dude is dead?

Koshin Keep Recon Reaction: After engaging: You have Reconnaissance at the current battlefield. Until this battle ends, your Ranged Attacks that do not destroy their target have the additional effects, "reduce the target's Force by the Ranged Attack's strength and you may take an additional Ranged Attack Battle action that may only target the same card".

Shikaro Battle: Ranged 4 Attack.

The answer is b).

Koshin Keep granting an "additional action" just means you get an additional action before the other player's normal opportunity to take a Battle action in that battle. It does not grant an additional use of your Personality's ability.

1) "Addtional actions" are ones granted outside the normal turn sequence; so, in this case, you get to take the second Ranged Attack action before the other player gets his normal opportunity to take an action or pass during the battle (see here for more detailed info).

2) As I said above, Koshin Keep granting an "additional action" just means you get an additional action before the other player's normal opportunity to take a Battle action in that battle. It does not grant an additional use of your Personality's ability.

I did read this, however, I wanted to further the question by asking if a personality such as Isawa Kaname who's ability can be used any number of times per turn, could she then, with Koshin Keep, reduce the target's force to 0 and then destroy it? Isawa Kaname: Battle: Any number of times per turn: Ranged 1 Attack.

Furthermore, does a personality equipped with Gift Armor and Cursed Relic that uses Cursed Relic's ability not receive -1C tokens? Obviously gift armor would negate the effects of the -1C tokens, but are the tokens still there? Gift Armor: Negate all current and new Chi penalties on this Personality. Negate any destruction of this card, except for its Personality being destroyed. Cursed Relic: Battle: Any number of times per turn, give this Personality -1C: Ranged 3 Attack. Battle: Bow this card, give this Personality -1C, and target an enemy card without attachments: Remove it from the game.

Does a personality equipped with Gift Armor and Cursed Relic that uses Cursed Relic's ability not receive -1C tokens? Cursed Relic does not give -1C tokens, it gives the Personality a direct chi penalty. Furthermore, this is done as a cost, not as an effect, so if the Personality also has a Gift Armor attached, the cost cannot paid, and the action may not be taken - you may not announce an action whose costs you cannot pay.

Couldn't find a way to reply to this in the thread so I thought I'd just PM you, sorry. To expand further on the first answer concerning Isawa Kaname, can a player use the Koshin Keep ability to, in one attack, destroy a target? For example, Isawa Kaname targets Ohaba(6F Personality) with a Ranged 1 Attack. The ranged attack does not kill him, but reduces Ohaba's force by 1. Since the ranged attack didn't destroy Ohaba the player takes an additional action to make another ranged 1 attack to reduce Ohaba's force by another 1. Again, the ranged attack didn't destroy the target so can the additional action trait repeat in that same turn?

You cannot reply to messages by deliberate policy to reduce the amount of noise. If you have a follow-up question, you need to start a new thread: we will deal with merging, if appropriate.

To answer the actual question, out of Koshin Keep, Isawa Kaname can reduce a Personality or Follower to 1F (not 0F, as another PM pointed out!) and destroy it using just one normal opportunity to take a Battle action plus the required number of additional Battle actions, before the other (or next) player gets his next normal opportunity to take a Battle action.
