A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I have Sneak Attack, Unnatural Flood and Scouring Flood in my hand. I declare attack and opposed battle begins. I play Sneak Attack and announce Equip action. Enemy plays Entrenched Position so...
1. I have to choose my unbowed shugenja and choose one of my spells (anyone at this moment) from my hand and it's mandatory to show it to my enemy? 2. As effects of Euqip are negated i don't have to pay costs and spell stays in my hand?
Entrenched Position Reaction: After the Attacker announces a Battle action before the Defender's first normal opportunity to act or pass: Negate its effects.
(Equip) Battle: Any number of times per turn, choose your performing unbowed opposed Shugenja and target a Spell in your hand: Attach it to him, paying all costs. You may take an additional action to use a Battle ability on that Spell.

You must choose your Performing Personality and target an attachment in hand. There is no requirement, however, that you show it. Your opponent may call a judge to confirm that the targeted card is a legal attachment.
If Equip's effects are negated, yes, you do not have to pay the costs of the attachment, and it remains in your hand.

This brings up an additional question. If an attacker uses Sneak Attack to attach a spell and then uses their additional action to use a battle action on that spell, then the defender could use Entrenched Position to negate that action's effects since it was taken before the defender's first normal opportunity to act or pass, correct?

Both the Equip action and the additional action from the spell are taken "before the Defender's first normal opportunity to act or pass."
