Skipping the Puddle and Effortless Counterattack

L5R CCG Rules board, 23 January 2012 to 24 January 2012

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I have Skipping the Puddle in play. I use the ability it grants me to move my unbowed Shugenja to the current battle. I announce that I will use the Equip (Battle) player ability. I choose my performing Shugenja and target a Spell in my hand. My opponent reacts by playing Effortless Counterattack.

Two questions now: 1) Does my targeting of the Spell in my hand reveal it's identity to my opponent at the time of targeting or only when it would try to Attach (which would be negated by Effortless, and thus the identity of the card remain unknown to my opponent)? and 2) Does the spell remain in my hand since the Attaching would be negated, or is the Spell discarded?

The EE Comprehensive rules on targeting only state that you can only target specific types/aspects of cards whose face is known to you, but doesn't mention you have to show it to your opponent to verify the legal targeting (Good Faith Rule keeps you from targeting a Spell if you have no Spells in hand, but doesn't address the possible issue if there were multiple Spells).

Relevant card/rulebook text: Skipping the Puddle - You have the ability, "Water Battle: If any enemy units are at the current battlefield, choose your performing Water Shugenja: Move him there. You may take an additional Battle action which he must perform."

Effortless Counterattack - Reaction: Before the resolution of a Battle action that was taken as an additional action: Negate its effects.

Equip (Battle) - Battle: Any number of times per turn, choose your performing unbowed opposed Shugenja and target a Spell in your hand: Attach it to him, paying all costs. You may take an additional action to use a Battle ability on that Spell.

1. There is no requirement that when you choose a card in your hand as a target that you immediately reveal that card. However, the Good Faith Rule requires that you must have a suitable card in hand. 2. If the Equip action's effects are negated, none of the process of attaching a card happens: it never even leaves your hand.
