New Dueling Rules

L5R CCG Rules board, 7 January 2012 to 11 January 2012

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I just wanted to make sure I'm reading the rules correctly. I can focus off the top of my deck as often as I want during a duel (up to the limit of four, of course), correct?

Correct.

In EE dueling rules, you may focus from your hand or the top of your deck in any combination, a total of four times (with the exception of a duel involving your Duelist, in which you may discard one of your focused cards in order to focus one additional time).

In the online rules i read: "Duelists and may discard a focused card to replace it with another focus before Focus Effects resolve."

While in this post http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=95594 i see the following "...a total of four times (with the exception of a duel involving your Duelist, in which you may discard one of your focused cards in order to focus one additional time)."

Also same in some later page in the rules pdf: "A player who has focused four times may not focus any more in that duel (Exception: see Duelist, p. 103)."

I got a bit confused. So the question is: a) Does a duelist get to focus 5 times with the fifth time being the one that he replaces actually one of the last 4? b)Or a duelist focuses 4 times and when a strike is called before focus effects resolve, if you control a duelist in the duel, you get to check the focused cards and just discard one to replace it with one other ( deck OR hand )?

b.

The online rulebook says this on p103: Duelist: If your Personality in a duel has the Duelist keyword, he has the following advantages: • If the duel ends in a tie and the other Personality is not a Duelist, the Duelist wins. • Before Focus Effects resolve, you may discard one of your focused cards and focus one additional card. This happens prior to any Reactions timed to “before Focus Effects resolve.” If two Duelists face each other, the active player does this first.
