Aroru (exp 2) vs Reinforce the gates

L5R CCG Rules board, 24 October 2011 to 25 October 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If player A plays sneak attack and then announces Aroru's battle action, can player B announce the reaction on Reinforce the gates since Aroru's action has not begun to resolve on announcement?

Reinforce: Reaction: After a player announces a Battle action before the Defender’s first normal opportunity to act or pass: Its effects do not happen.

Aroru: Battle: Other players may not take Reactions until this action ends. Ranged 5 Attack.

Thank you!

Yes. Any reactions to announcement (or targeting, tho that isn't pertinent here) are not affected by the "no reactions" clause of Aroru's ability.

Given Palmer's response, does that mean that player B in this scenario could react with Ryoshun's Guidance and change the target of the ranged 5 attack?

Ryoshun's Guidance: Reaction: When another players action would target one of your cards, discard this card: Choose another of your non-Stronghold cards at the same location. The action targets it instead, if legal.

For the next month give or take, the answer to your question of Reactions to targeting is "yes, you CAN react to the targeting of Aroru's Ranged Attack".

However, as of EE, Ranged Attack targeting will no longer be required. It will be optional, as required targeting will have wholly moved to constraints but the "Ranged X Attack" shorthand will not have changed, putting its targeting in effects and after Aroru's clause prohibiting Reactions.

I should also note, this change won't affect Palmer's ruling above.
