Winning a Battle where there are no opposing units

L5R CCG Rules board, 14 October 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Let's say I assign Kaiu Genji (4F) to attack at a province controlled by a player playing Shattered Peaks Castle (8PS)

The Defender chooses not to oppose my attacking personality.

Both players pass.

I clearly do not have enough force to take the province.

However, do I "win" the battle?

Do I *have* to destroy an opposing army or province to win the battle? It does not appear so.

From the CR,

1. Determine Outcome: Total the Force of each army (see Total Force). Whichever army has the highest total Force wins.

A side with no units has zero Force for purposes of this comparison, and is not affected by things that directly alter the Force of an “army”.

The calculation and comparison of army force is made only once. Any changes to army total Force after this point (e.g., units on the winning side being destroyed due to Reactions) do not alter the outcome.

The winning army’s leader (the Attacker or Defender) is the winner of the battle.

If both armies have the same total Force and both armies contain one or more units, the battle is a tie.

Any other result (such as an army with total Force of zero versus a side with no units) has no defined outcome, in which case, nothing happens in step 2.

I sense that this question is a set-up for some combo that involves some other card or rule effect. What card(s) are you looking at where this matters?

That said, the section of the wiki you quoted does say that a "zero force army against no units" has no outcome, indicating that an army with force against no units is different, and a won battle.
