L5R CCG Rules board, 15 September 2011 to 18 September 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

ok we have a small group of players, and no store sells cards so we have been ordering and playing------- legacy------- for 5 years now. as of recently i have started reading the new rulebook and we might be playing wrong, please help me out?

1. reducing gold cost;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;: bringing in a a personality and using reactions to reduce the cost of an attachment and attach it -" can this reduce the cost to 0 and be free?" 2. terrain some say delayed and some do not when and how do terrains take effect IE: unfamillar ground and narrow ground. 3.when performing an action from a strategy card : does the personality have to be un-bowed 4. legion of one says heroic then below it says battle:..... does this mean the performer has to be heroic or its just labeled a heroic card

1. bringing in a a personality and using reactions to reduce the cost of an attachment and attach it -" can this reduce the cost to 0 and be free?"

No rule forbids this.

2. terrain some say delayed and some do not when and how do terrains take effect

Too vague to answer, it depends on card text.

IE: unfamillar ground and narrow ground.

Unfamiliar Ground works like any other Battle action and its effects are activated immediately when the action resolves. When you play it, it bows all cards with 5 or higher Force now at the current battlefield. The only difference with a normal Battle Strategy is that it is a Terrain, which means it enters play at the current battlefield before it resolves, and that you cannot play it if another Terrain is already in play, and that it will be destroyed after the battle resolves.

Narrow Ground uses the old templating of "delayed terrains", which means its effects are delayed until before the battle resolves (quite similar to Rocky Terrain). However like all Terrains, it enters play at the current battlefield immediately when it is played, so that no other player may play another Terrain while it remains in play.

3. when performing an action from a strategy card : does the personality have to be un-bowed

No, unless the action explicitly requires an unbowed performer (e.g. "Bow your performing Monk" or "Choose your performing unbowed Duelist").

4. legion of one says heroic then below it says battle:..... does this mean the performer has to be heroic or its just labeled a heroic card

Here, Heroic is a keyword of the Strategy card. Per the rules about keywords, it means that each of its abilities inherits that keyword. However it has no consequence about who the action may target (it has no performer, by the way). For more information, see Keywords and Perform.

To expand on this answer, there have been 3 stages in the game of how Terrains worked.

Prior to Gold Edition in 2001, all Terrain effects were delayed until just before battle resolution unless they said otherwise.

In Gold Edition, Terrains said explicitly their effects were delayed as before, or "immediate," taking place as the Terrain was played.

Under all those rule sets (through Celestial in 2009) Terrains were put into play by taking a rulebook Battle action. During Celestial, the templating has changed to make Terrains fit within the normal way of using cards, so Terrains have their entering-play action printed on them. Their effects take place through their own traits while in play and through side effects of the entering-play action.

Hope this helps.
