Akodo Shigetoshi

L5R CCG Rules board, 6 June 2011 to 12 June 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Akodo Shigetoshi (Experienced 2) Lion Clan • Clan Champion • Samurai • Tactician • Commander • Experienced 2 • Loyal • Unique Reaction: After Shigetoshi enters play: Create a 2F Follower and attach it to a target Personality. Battle: Destroy your target Personality or Follower: Destroy a target enemy card; if your own targeted card was a Follower, the targeted enemy card must have no attachments.

Can I attach the follower created to another players' personality? Like a Cavalry personality perhaps? I ask because "a target personality" is pretty broad.

Card types, Playing attachments: A player may only attach attachments to a Personality he controls.

So I was looking at this.

And while I generally agree, I'd like to point out that Shigetoshi's text may override that rule based on the 1st Cardinal rule.

Reaction: After Shigetoshi enters play: Create a 2F Follower and attach it to a target Personality.

vs the equip rulebook action....

(Equip) Limited: Any number of times per turn, target one of your Personalities: Attach a target attachment card from your hand to him.

For the record there are 49 cards that "attach" cards to personalities. 15 explicitly state who the attachment attaches to 30 use "your" explicitly (cards like Yoritomo Naizen, Mirumoto Kei, Utaku Meadows...) 3 are worded like Shigetoshi (the other two are Cavalry Officer and Daigotsu Bukaro) 1 indicates an explicit exception (Forging the Gift, which was MRP'd)

Since Shigetoshi, Naizen, Kei, Utaku Meadows and Forging the Gift are all base CE cards either editing let us all down, or there was an explicit reason Shigetoshi doesn't use "Your'. I have a hard time believing it was for space reasons as the total difference in the text would be 3 characters. If Shigetoshi's text doesn't override this rule, why not? Is there technical errata somewhere changing his and the other cards text?

You need much more explicit wording to get round the rule I quoted above, eg: Reaction: After Shigetoshi enters play: Create a 2F Follower and attach it to a target Personality controlled by any player.

Referencing this ruling

Daigotsu Bukaro Limited: Pay 2 Gold and target a Personality: Create a 1F Follower and attach it to the Personality.

When Bukaro was previewed, everyone assumed that he could attach followers to another player's personality (potentially screwing over your opponent's cavalry). Does the ruling on Shigetoshi mean that Bukaro can't do that, or is it different because Bukaro targets the personality first?

In regards to this.

Does this mean that I can still target anybody, but the effects will fail due to the rules? Or does it mean i can only target my personalities (good faith rule)? Seems like the former, not sure if there is a janktastic combo in there or not, but if it works i'll try and find one.

These two paragraphs of the Good Faith Rule explain why you can only target one of your Personalities with Shigetoshi's and Bukaro's actions:

If the action involves putting one or more cards into play as a non-optional effect, the player must be able to meet all costs and requirements to bring those cards into play legally, in order to meet the Good Faith rule. This includes having a Personality who can legally attach any attachments to be brought into play. A player cannot announce an action on the basis of a legal card to play, but then choose an illegal attachment or Personality for the actual play choice.

So based on akodogilador's response here.

I guess that means even though all three cards(Akodo Shigetoshi, Cavalry Officer, Daigotsu Bukaro) are worded as "target a personality", they are effectively "target your personality".

So much for EE being "premium" edition. So much for cards not being confusing for new players. Technical errata for at least Bukaro would be nice, unless the rules are going to change and suddenly he will work the way he is worded, but I won't be holding my breath on that one. Disappointing.
