Hida Defenders and harpooning

L5R CCG Rules board, 24 May 2011 to 26 May 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hida Defenders says: Reaction: After the resolution of your action that bowed, destroyed, or moved a Personality who has opposed this card at the current battlefield: Gain 2 Honor.

If I move a personality at home (i.e. Matsu Kasei, Countermove) into the current battlefield and is now opposing the Hida Defenders, is that a trigger for the reaction in it? Or would I need to first harpoon, then bow/move/destroy the harpooned personality? The present perfect tense in the reaction suggests that the effect should have happened while the personality was opposing the Hida Defenders.

You may react with Hida Defenders after moving a Personality to the current battlefield.

If Hida Defenders said "a Personality who opposed this card", without the "has", then the text under Special wording rules, References, "References involving a game state in the context of a past occurrence check the game state only at the time of the occurrence," would mean that you would check the location of the Personality immediately before the relevant effect was applied.

However, because it says "has opposed", the trigger is not limited to checking the Personality's location at that time: it can be satisfied by the Personality's presence at the current battlefield at any time - with Hida Defenders also present - before the Reaction is announced.
