Ambush and Assigning a Unit Other Than the Targeted Unit

L5R CCG Rules board, 13 February 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Im prolly going to get a Mod handslapping here, but I don't know how to link posts and the search did not reveal what I was looking for.

As the topic states, I am inquiring to legality of playing Ambush on a Personality that is not the Personality assigned to attack.

Ambush states:

Text Limited: Target your unbowed Personality: Create a battlefield (not at any province). Assign your Personality's unit to attack there. Assign another player’s target unit to defend there, even if its Personality is bowed. Other units will not move there. Fight a battle there (after this action's resolution). After the battle ends, lose 5 Honor.

Now some players have been targeting a unit at home and then assigning a completely different unit to attack. The portion in the effects block that refers to which unit may be assigned to attack describes that unit as the "Personality's unit". In other similar wording the Personality being referred to is the one that was originally targeted.

For example, Seeking the Guilty states:

Battle: Target your unbowed Magistrate: Move a target enemy Personality with lower Personal Honor than your Magistrate's Chi home. His controller looses Honor equal to the number of dishonorable Personalities he controls or 3, whichever is lower.

The Magistrate whose Chi compared to the targeted enemy Personality's personal honor is the Magistrate that was originally targeted by the action. No other Magistrate's Chi is considered. By that standard, the Personality that was originally targeted by Ambush (which incidentally is the same Personality who will cause the loss of 5 Honor) must be the one to attack the defending enemy personality.

So, to put it formally, can a player target a personality with Ambush and then assign a completely different unit to attack? I believe I have correctly outlined the answer. In case that I am mistaken, could I please have a thorough explanation of why this is legal?

Those players have not been playing the action correctly.

No.

The text "your Personality" in Ambush's effects is indeed referencing the one targeted in constraints, just as you outlined.
