Calm before Death Revisited

L5R CCG Rules board, 12 December 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I was reading a post from back in 2009 about Calm before Death and I felt like it was unclear of the verdict. Here's what happened to me that raises the question.

I was at a battle vs. ikarukani with an attachment bringing him to 10 force. he sneaks and calms ikarukani which he says reduces 10 from both of my personalities. up until now i always thought that it meant:

cost:destroy your target unbowed berserker/deathseeker action process- 1)choose 1 or 2 targets 2)reduce their force by an amount equal to your Berserkers/deathseekers force -any combination of numbers that adds up to equal the force of your berserker i.e. -1f to first and -9 to second, -2f to first and -8 to second, etc. 3)if a target cards is equal to 0 destroy it.

If this is how it works then this card is decent. a berserker can kill someone with less force and any extra is used to reduce force of other enemies at the battlefield.

However, their is another way of viewing this card. the other way of looking at this is: cost:destroy your target unbowed berserker/deathseeker action process- 1)choose 1 or 2 targets 2)reduce their force by an amount equal to your Berserkers/deathseekers force -each by the total force that the berserker has 3)if a target cards is equal to 0 destroy it.

IMO if the card is played like the latter then it seems broken. it basically says double a heros effective amount of force. Its almost like having a card that reads "double your personalities force" which is like wedge on crack because of an added kill action.

either way is fine for me. in the game i pulled off a victory at the batle by dropping a SSS to save my guy who he intended to kill, then dropping Justly earned victory to get rid of both his -10's. anyways let me know what you guys think.

it basically says double a heros effective amount of force.

Which is consistent with what was said here:
