Fearless Defense, Wrath and Personalities with reactions

L5R CCG Rules board, 4 November 2010 to 5 November 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Fearless Defense reads:

Battle: Choose your performing unbowed Personality and bow all unbowed cards in his unit: Bow a target enemy Personality. Destroy him if his unit's total Gold Cost is lower than your Personality's unit's total Gold Cost.

Wrath reads: Battle/Open: Bow your performing Samurai: Bow a target Personality with lower Force and no attachments. If this is a Combat Segment, destroy the Personality.

Question: How does these cards interact when the personality targeted has destruction negation, specifically:

Akodo Senichi, Arugai no Oni, Furumaro, Hida Yaheiko, Yogo Kazunori

Wrath: How does these cards interact when the personality targeted has destruction negation(?)

They're played, and all the effects happen except the destruction, which is negated due to the other card effect.

Possibly relevant but a bit hard to tell:

http://rules.l5r.com/CE_FAQ#Is_an_actio ... _happen.3F

http://rules.l5r.com/CE_FAQ#If_one_effe ... _happen.3F ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think there is a small timing issue here. I'll parse the card text and comment on what I believe is the right answer.

Arugai no Oni: Reaction: After another player's action targets an Oni at Arugai's location: Negate the Oni's destruction from the action's effects.

Hida Yaheiko: Reaction: After another player’s action targets Yaheiko: Negate Yaheiko’s destruction from the action’s effects.

The trigger for this reaction is targeting, so destruction is negated.

These 2 cards are worded differently than the other 3.

Akodo Senichi: Reaction: Before another player's card's effect destroys one of your Lion Clan Samurai Personalities in Senichi's army, destroy Senichi: Negate the Personality's destruction. Gain 3 Honor.

Furumaro: Reaction: Before an action destroys Furumaro: Negate his destruction.

Yogo Kazunori: Reaction: Before another player's action destroys Kazunori: Negate the destruction. You may move Kazunori home. If he moved, you may dishonor a Personality.

The trigger for this reaction is destruction, Fearless Defense and Wrath bow the personality. Then (after a period, therefore a separate effect) they destroy the target. I believe that when the trigger for the reaction is met, the personality is already bowed and cannot take that action.

Please clarify, since these are each distinct cases.

Thanks.

Indeed.

If the trigger for the Reaction is targeting, the Personality - eg Arugai no Oni or Hida Yaheiko - won't have been bowed yet by the first effect of Fearless Defence or Wrath, and so will be able to use the Reaction.

If the trigger for the Reaction is destruction, the Personality - eg Akodo Senichi, Furumaro, Yogo Kazunori - will have been bowed by the first effect of Fearless Defence or Wrath, and so won't be able to use the Reaction.
