Thorough Preparations and Outsider Keep

L5R CCG Rules board, 15 October 2010 to 16 October 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Thorough Preparations 0GC Reaction: After this card enters a discard pile from your hand during a battle: Draw a card. 4FV

Outsider Keep Unicorn Clan Stronghold 7/5/4 Reaction: After engaging at a battlefield where you control an opposed unit: Give each of your Personalities there +1F. Draw a card. Discard a card unless one of your Personalities there is a Tactician.

If I discard Thorough Preparations using Outsider Keep's ability, do I get to draw a card from its reaction?

You may use Thorough Preparations' Reaction.

Battles, Combat Segment: Engaging is the time point at which the battle, and the Combat Segment, both begin. Specifically, things that are triggered “before engaging” do not occur in or during the battle, and things that are triggered “after engaging” do occur in and during the battle.

While I'm almost certain that it has no barring on the ruling, I'd like to point out Thorough Preparations does not have a reaction. It is a trait.

The rule that Alex mentioned refers to triggers, not Reactions, so no difference in the answer I can think of.
