If I attack with a naval personality and Yamauchi, and the defender defends with a non-naval personality, can I use the naval reaction to use Yamauchi's ability with my naval personality performing it? Or would Yamauchi have to be naval as well?
Thanks.

No. Not unless he somehow gets the Naval keyword. I've added some emphasis to the description of the ability.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_The_Player#Player_abilities: "Reaction: After engaging, once per battle, if you are the Attacker and your current army has more Naval cards than the side opposing it, target your Naval Personality: You have the first opportunity to take a Battle action, which must be performed by the targeted Personality."
Correction: See below.

Zen quoted the rulebook Naval Reaction: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_The_Player#Player_abilities: "Reaction: After engaging, once per battle, if you are the Attacker and your current army has more Naval cards than the side opposing it, target your Naval Personality: You have the first opportunity to take a Battle action, which must be performed by the targeted Personality."
Yamauchi reads: Battle: Target your unbowed Personality or Follower, and bow it unless you are a defending player: Ranged Attack with strength equal to its Force.
If, as in moto_hatamo's example, there is an attacking force consisting of a Naval personality and Yamauchi, opposed by a defending non-Naval personality, is not the sequence thus:
I announce the rulebook Naval Reaction, as I meet the condition for it. I target the Naval personality in the attacking army, per the rulebook action. I then announce Yamauchi's ability, targeting the attacking Naval personality, and bowing it per the action's conditional cost.
The targeting of Yamauchi's action occurs between the colons (the "constraints block"), thus the Naval personality is indeed "performing" Yamauchi's action. The rulebook Naval reaction doesn't care who else performs the action, so long as the personality targeted by the rulebook action performs it. In this case, are not both the Naval personality AND Yamauchi performing the action (the Naval personality by virtue of being targeted in the constraints block, and Yamauchi by virtue of it being an action printed on his card)?

Thanks for the catch. That's correct.
