Prepare for the Worst + Dishonor (Delayed Actions)

L5R CCG Rules board, 7 July 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Relevant Cards: Prepare For The Worst Text Recon Open: If it is not your turn, target your Scout Personality: Target your province that has not been targeted by another card titled Prepare for the Worst this turn. Attacking Personalities and Followers have -1F while at that province's battlefield. Before this turn ends, if the province was not destroyed, gain 3 Honor.

Relevant Rule's Text: There are a number of ways to rehonor a dishonorable Personality. * Before a player gains Honor from an action or trait that targeted, came from, or was performed by one or more of his or her dishonorable Personalities, the Personality is rehonored and the player does not gain the Honor. (For rules on when dishonorable status is checked, see References). * Before a player gains Honor from attaching a card to one of his or her dishonorable Personalities, the Personality is rehonored and the player does not gain the Honor. * Before a player with one or more dishonorable Personalities in his or her army gains Honor from allying with that army (see Invite Allies) or from destroying enemy cards in battle resolution, all such dishonorable Personalities are rehonored and the Honor is not gained. In a tied battle, all dishonorable Personalities in an army are rehonored before being destroyed, and their army’s leader gains no Honor.

References: References involving a game state in the context of a past occurence check the game state only at the time of the occurrence. See also the reference rules above and under "This". Example: This applies to the rehonoring rule "Before a player gains Honor from an action or trait that targeted, came from, or was performed by one or more of his or her dishonorable Personalities, the Personality is rehonored and the player does not gain the Honor." Dishonorable status is checked only at the time the targeting, origin or performing of the action or trait is established.

Questions: 1) When a delayed honor gain from an action occurs that targeted my personality triggers, does it check the honorable status of my personality? 2) If my scout (Doji Murata let us say) performs Prepare for the Worst in an honorable state, and then is dishonored after prepare for the worst resolves (establishing the delayed effect), do I gain the honor, or is the scout (Doji Murata) rehonored? 3) If my scout (Doji Murata again) performs Prepare for the Worst in a dishonorable state, and then is rehonored before prepare for the worst is triggered, does the player gain the honor?

I'm fairly sure that i know the answer, but I want to make sure. Delayed effects really do concern me.

1) When a delayed honor gain from an action occurs that targeted my personality triggers, does it check the honorable status of my personality?

Per the rule you quoted, dishonorable status is checked only at the time the targeting of the action is established.

2) If my scout (Doji Murata let us say) performs Prepare for the Worst in an honorable state, and then is dishonored after prepare for the worst resolves (establishing the delayed effect), do I gain the honor, or is the scout (Doji Murata) rehonored?

You gain 3 Honor and your Doji Murata remains dishonorable.

3) If my scout (Doji Murata again) performs Prepare for the Worst in a dishonorable state, and then is rehonored before prepare for the worst is triggered, does the player gain the honor?

You do not gain the Honor and the rehonoring of your honorable Doji Murata fails.
