Reactions and Failing Effects

L5R CCG Rules board, 3 June 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I hope the rules team will forgive me for this slight misuse of the rules forum. I am about to start running an enlightenment deck and wish to use cards such as 'Hamstrung' and 'Cowed by Wisdom' to react to triggers that don't necessarily involve movement. I have already encountered players who insist that these actions are illegal for playing the Ring of Void and I would like to be able to point them to a rules thread where the Rules Junta have specifically stated that what I'm doing is allowed.

So, with that out of the way, please could one of the rules team kindly confirm the following sequence of actions is legal:

I bow my personality to lobby for the imperial favor. I then react four times with 2x Cowed by Wisdom and 2x Hamstrung. Having resolved these 4 actions, I put the Ring of Void into play.

Hamstrung Reaction: Before the resolution of an action: Choose a Personality. Negate his movement into attacking armies from the action.

Cowed By Wisdom: Reaction: Before an action's resolution: Negate the action's movement of Personalities that are not yours from the current battlefield.

Thanks very much for helping in this matter!

Legal.

That a Reaction will prevent some effect does not mean that other Reactions to the same trigger that will also prevent the effect cannot be played.

When there's a trigger for Reactions, you go around the table playing Reactions to that trigger until everyone passes (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Sequence_of_play#Action_Phase). One Reaction doesn't automatically "force" anything to move forward.
