Furumaro vs Drinking One's Life

L5R CCG Rules board, 18 April 2010 to 19 April 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Furumaro is targeted by Drinking One's Life (or Isawa Fosuta) and receives his 4th +1F/-1C token. Will his ability to negate his own destruction keep him alive until the end of the turn in the same way as Strength of the Bamboo?

(as per Fosuta vs Strength of the Bamboo)

Relevant cards:

Furumaro: 4C Reaction: Before an action destroys Furumaro: Negate his destruction.

Drinking One's Life: Open: Target your Oni Personality: Target another Personality. Lose 3 Honor. While your Oni remains in play, after the start of each player's turn, give the other Personality a +1F/-1C token.

Strength of the Bamboo: Reaction: After an action targets your Hero Perosnality: Negate his destruction from the action's effects. Give him +1F.

Isawa Fosuta: Maho Open: Bow Fosuta: Lose 6 Honor. While Fosuta remains bowed, you may negate his straightening and, at the start of each turn, you may target a Personality and give him a -1F/-1C Curse token. After the next time this game Fosuta straightens or leaves play, destroy all Curse tokens.

Yes. The wording in those two cases are parallel.

in regards to this: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=83019

isn't Furumaro's reaction different in that is only says "Reaction: Before an action destroys Furumaro: Negate his destruction." where as strength of the bamboo says "Reaction: After an action targets your Hero Perosnality: Negate his destruction from the action's effects. Give him +1F."(emphasis mine) because if was told properly, chi death is checked every second by the game. since furumaro only stops it once wouldn't it just check it again and kill him?

Thanks for the catch. That's correct.

Negation "destruction from its effects" will keep 0C Personalities standing; negating "destruction" won't (as only on destruction effect is negated).

Sorry.
