Jigoku Sensei VS A new teacher

L5R CCG Rules board, 16 March 2010 to 17 March 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi,

I would like to understand Jigoku Sensei restriction : "Your deck must still be legal." If I use this Sensei at the start of the Game, that means that my dynasty deck should have at least 40 legal cards once I have put the onis under the Sensei, does it? Does it means that I can have 3 copies of a non-unique Onis in My dynasty Deck and 3 more copies of the same non-unique Oni under the Sensei ?

So now, the game has started, I use A new teacher to put Jigoku Sensei into play. I check my dynasty deck to put the onis under the Sensei. How can I check that my dynasty deck is legal ?

The cards : ----------------------- Jigoku Sensei - Shadowlands Sensei After revealing this Sensei, put up to nine non-Unique Oni Personalities from your deck face-down under it. Your deck must still be legal. You may not play non-Unique Oni Personalities from your Provinces. Limited: Pay 3 Gold and discard one of your Shugenja to put into play one of these Oni with lower Gold cost than the Shugenja's cost plus Chi, ignoring costs. ----------------------- A new teacher - Limited: Play a Sensei card from your hand. It remains in play until the end of the game, altering your Stronghold as if it were played normally before the game began. Discard all other Sensei cards you have in play. -----------------------

Thanks in advance, Rémi.

I would like to understand Jigoku Sensei restriction : "Your deck must still be legal."

It means, after putting the Oni cardss under Jigoku sensei, your Dynasty deck must still have the minimum 40 cards. So:

If I use this Sensei at the start of the Game, that means that my dynasty deck should have at least 40 legal cards once I have put the onis under the Sensei, does it?

Yes.

Does it means that I can have 3 copies of a non-unique Onis in My dynasty Deck and 3 more copies of the same non-unique Oni under the Sensei ?

No. Your deck also had to be legal BEFORE Jigoku Sensei was revealed.

So now, the game has started, I use A new teacher to put Jigoku Sensei into play. I check my dynasty deck to put the onis under the Sensei. How can I check that my dynasty deck is legal?

I'm going to use some powers of interpretation here and say that the legality check refers to the deck's construction, since construction is the only way a "deck" can be "legal" or "illegal". If your opponent does not trust that you had 49 cards in your deck before you put the 9 Oni under Jigoku Sensei due to A New Teacher, he could call a judge to verify.
