Cowed by Wisdom and no Battlefield

L5R CCG Rules board, 18 February 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Can the reaction on Cowed by Wisdom be used even if there is no battlefield? I'm assuming that it can be used in reaction to anything, similar to Holy Site, but I just want to make sure.

Reaction: Before an action's resolution: Negate the action's movement of Personalities that are not yours from the current battlefield.

Can the reaction on Cowed by Wisdom be used even if there is no battlefield?

This is a variation of the frequently asked question, "Does an effect have to happen for an action to be legal?"

It does not.

Cheers for the quick response, but for the record I had referred to the FAQ, and since it doesn't actually make clear what's considered a condition for the Good Faith Rule, I wasn't sure if involving a Battlefield was one.

Perhaps the FAQ could be updated to be clearer about the Good Faith Rule?

That is not the purpose of the FAQ. Your question about conditions is not frequently asked, so its answer must be found in the comprehensive rules.

As my esteemed colleague Alex explained in another topic, the definition of "Conditions" that you're after is under Card Features, Abilities: The constraints block has one or more of these elements: * Reaction trigger. ... * Conditions. Some conditions are restrictions, limiting when the action can be taken (such as, “If you control no Courtiers”). Others allow a player to take the action in spite of the game rules or other effects (such as, “Even if this card is bowed” overrides the rule that abilities on bowed cards cannot be used.) Sometimes a condition does both; “If this card is face-up in one of your Provinces” restricts the use of the ability, but also implicitly allows it to be used when the card is out of play, which overrides the basic rules. * Costs. ... * Targeting may appear in the constraints block.

Cowed by Wisdom's Reaction's constraints block has no condition.
