Ambush & Obfuscation & Ritual of Summoning

L5R CCG Rules board, 14 January 2010 to 15 January 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

A player, 14 January 2010

Ambush: Limited: Target your unbowed Personality: Create a battlefield (not at any province). Assign your Personality's unit to attack there. Assign another player’s target unit to defend there, even if its Personality is bowed. Other units will not move there. Fight a battle there (after this action's resolution). After the battle ends, lose 5 Honor.

Obfuscation: Battle: Attach a target attachment from your hand or discard pile to your target Personality. You may take an additional action to use one of the attachment's base Battle abilities.

Ritual of Summoning: Limited: Destroy this card: Permanently set the performing Shugenja's Force and Chi to 5, and permanently give him Shadowlands • Nonhuman • Oni and the ability, "Battle: Bow this card: Ranged 7 Attack." Lose 3 Honor.

Just wanting to verify that the rules work the way I think they do. During an ambush attack I create, if I use obfuscation to attach ritual of summoning, I can then use ritual of summoning on my next action since I am still in my limited/actions step. Is that correct?

No it is not correct.

Firstly because of Obfuscation's text (emphasis added): "to use one of the attachment's base Battle abilities". The ability on Ritual of Summoning has the Limited designator only, not the Battle designator, so it cannot be used thanks to Obfuscation.

Secondly per the rules about Battles (emphasis mine): "When a battle is created in a phase other than the Attack Phase, rules for taking actions during Combat Segments override rules for taking actions in that phase, but it is still that phase (see Additional phase or segment). Example: During a battle created by a card effect during the Action Phase, you may not take Limited actions, because they may not be played during the Combat Segment. You may, however, take Reactions during this battle that look for triggers “during the Action Phase.”".
