Falling Leaf Strike

L5R CCG Rules board, 18 December 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I just saw this ruling here about Falling Leaf Strike. I think that is in error. The targeting of the opposing unit seems to be an effect of the action and not required targeting. Therefore, Falling Leaf Strike can be used to move into a battlefield unopposed, correct?

Kiho Battle: Target your unbowed Monk: Move him to the current battlefield. Give a target enemy Personality or Follower -3F. Bow it if its Force is now 0.

Any targeting not preceeded by "may", or as part of an optional effect is required targeting.

The effect of "Give a target Personality or Follower -3F" does not have a "You may" or similar conditional phrase in front of it, so it is a mandatory effect, and the targeting stated in the effect is required targeting.
