oni question

L5R CCG Rules board, 10 December 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

here is the situation:

i have a Shikibu no Oni, a Shikage no Oni, and a master selah token at a battlefield. i use Shikage no Oni and target Shikibu no Oni. his trait goes off and i remove the zombie. now if this is correct do i then get to kill an 8 force enemy personality?

Shikage no Oni: Battle: Destroy your target Personality: Destroy a target enemy unit with lower total Force than your Personality's Force.

Shikibu no Oni: Before an action destroys Shikibu: Negate the destruction. If he is in play after the action's resolution, choose one of your Personalities at Shikubu's location; he is consumed by Jigoku. Remove the chosen Personality from the game.

thank you

No, you can't make your Shikibu no Oni (Experienced) perform Shikage no Oni's action.

Shikibu's trait would negate Shikage's action's mandatory cost, which would prevent it from resolving (see Interference with mandatory costs).

The Good Faith Rule compels you to be able to pay Shikage's action's mandatory cost, and to do so unless your opponent interferes. When you announce this action, you know that Shikibu's trait would negate its destruction from this action's mandatory cost so you can't take it if you intend to make it performed by your Shikibu no Oni. It must be performed by the ghul, or by Shikage alone.
