movement from home

L5R CCG Rules board, 29 November 2009 to 1 December 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I just read that Yoritomo Kurei says "Even if Kurei is at home," but someone told me that the performer of an action that would move another personality to a battlefield can be done from home anyway. An example would be Kuon being at home and moving someone else into the battlefield. Is AEG being redundant, or was the person who told me that on crack?

Incorrect.

http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Battles#Rule_of_Location:

"1. A card in a unit must be at the current battlefield to be targeted by a Battle action." Nothing about performance.

"2. If a Battle action is on a card in a unit (a Personality or attachment in play), the unit must be at the current battlefield in order to take that action." This is the one cards at home run afoul of. Nothing about performance there, either.

A card that moves other cards can't move those other cards around will-nilly while it remains at home. (Though said card could move itself in from home.)

I am confused by this ruling.

It seems to me that Kureis text gets around Part 2 of the Rule of Location and the fact that the action moves a unit gets around part 1.

EXCEPTION: As with the Rule of Presence, a Battle action can target OR be taken by a card in a unit at another location if its costs or effects say they are able to move that unit to the current battlefield. The player who is taking the action must take choices within the action, if possible, such that they do move that unit there. [Emphasis mine]

Seems to me that Kurei's text when he is at home, exempts him from the need of this Exception to the Rule of Location for Part 2. Which just leaves Part 1. The target has to be present, or be moving there as part of the actions costs or effects.

So, for example. Random Naval Samurai at Provinces 1 and 2, Kurei at Home. Province 1 opposed. Province 2 unopposed.

#1) Kurei can move himself to Province 1? Yes. This is not in dispute, just here for completeness. #2) Kurei can move Personality at Province 2 to Province 1? Yes, though the linked ruling seems to say no. Looking for clarification understanding. If No, why does Kurei have the text "Even if Kurei is at home"? Seems like either the above is legal, or this is redundant text. Since the exception would allow Kurei to target himself at home regardless of his own text containing the exception to Part 2. The poster of the linked question was asking this as well.

A follow up to this... can Kurei do either of these using the Naval reaction granted to all players? Seems like he definitely could for either situation. Assuming, he could for #2 at all given the CR.

Reaction: After engaging, once per battle, if you are the Attacker and your current army has more Naval cards than the side opposing it, target your Naval Personality: You have the first opportunity to take a Battle action, which must be performed by the targeted Personality.

And the fact that Reactions do not require presence, though the ensuing Battle action would.

The original question was asking, "What is the point of the 'even if' clause on Yoritomo Kurei, since I've been told that you can take such actions anyway?", to which Zen replied explaining why in general you cannot take such actions, so Yoritomo Kurei's 'even if' clause is required.

If he didn't have that clause, the answers would be 1) Yes, Kurei may move himself to Province 1. 2) No, Kurei may not move Personality at Province 2 to Province 1.

However, because he has that 'even if' clause, the answers to your questions are 1) Yes, Kurei may move himself to Province 1. 2) Yes, Kurei may move Personality at Province 2 to Province 1.
