Arrival o/t Obsidian Champion + Blade of Guile + Gift Armor

L5R CCG Rules board, 10 September 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Alright, so I am not 'dumb', but this seems like something I should clarify, since I just dropped it in a game and the player I was playing against seemed dumbfounded.

Situation:

Step 1.) I bow stronghold + Secluded Outpost + Secluded Outpost + Marketplace for Doji Domotai Exp 4. I gain 5 honor. Step 2.) I attach Blade of Guile + Gift Armor to Doji Domotai Exp 4 for free (Due to 2x secluded outpost) Step 3.) I end my dynasty phase and draw 3 cards thanks to both my enemy and I having Inheriting an Heirloom in play. Step 4.) My opponent passes his first limited, and I proceed to play Arrival of the Obsidian Champion on Doji Domotai exp 4. I do not dishonor her. I permamently raise her force to 10(15 with weapon+armor), I do not modify her chi(stays at 6). I permanently give her shadowlands, and the ability “Fear Battle: Bow each Follower with 4 or less Force in a target unit.” Step 6.) My opponent calls foul.

Edit: How did I skip from 2 to 4?

Thank you to those who answered. I appreciate it. ------------------------------------

The relevant cards:

Arrival of the Obsidian Champion: 0G 3FV Open: Lose 3 Honor. Dishonor your target Personality with a Gold Cost of 9 or higher. Permanently set his Force to 10 and his Chi to 2. Permanently give him Shadowlands and the ability, “Fear Battle: Bow each Follower with 4 or less Force in a target unit.”

Blade of Guile: +2F +0C 3G 4FV Shamesword • Weapon This Personality has a maximum Personal Honor of 0. Negate any dishonoring of this Personality. Reaction: After this card enters play: Rehonor its Personality.

Gift Armor: +3F +0C 4G 2FV Armor Negate all current and new Chi penalties on this Personality. Negate any destruction of this card except from its Personality being destroyed.

Did I play this all to the rules?

Steps 1, 2 and 4 look fine.

Step 5 is somewhat incorrect. The permanent bonus in force takes Doji Domotai to 10F, which INCLUDES the bonuses Blade of Guile and Gift Armor.

Remember that "Setting" someone's force to X is inclusive of all current bonuses and penalties, including those on items.

Doji Domotai Experienced 4's Chi would remain 6, due to the negation given by the Gift Armor. Doji Domotai would remain honorable (if at 0PH) due to the negation given by the Blade of Guile. You would lose 3 honor as well as an effect of Arrival of the Obsidian Champion.

A little extra addendum to the above bit of Dan's:

What it means is, what Arrival of the Obsidian Champion would do is give the currently-9-Force Domotai (base+armor+blade) a 1F bonus, to "set" her to 10F total.
