Sunagawa and naval performing

L5R CCG Rules board, 13 August 2009 to 14 August 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi there again!

Another question popped up!

We have Sunagawa trying to do naval invasion with his own ability, Battle: Bow your target Follower: Ranged Attack with strength equal to the Follower's Force. The follower he uses is of course non-naval.Is there any problem with the naval invasion because the follower is also performing the action and is not naval?

Perform: The Personality or Follower was targeted in the action’s constraint block (the section between the two colons).

Thank a lot for your help!

The Follower is not "also" performing the action. The Follower alone performs the action. As the Personality is not performing the action, not allowed.

Additional: Whoops. See below.

Even though the action is printed on a card with the naval keyword, because the follower is bowing as a cost, the action cannot be used as a "naval" action correct?

I was under the impression that if an action was printed on a personality, that personality was considered performing the action. For example, Kakita Idzuki has the ability: Battle: Bow target dishonorable personality. His controller loses 2 honor, and you gain 2 honor.

Under the linked topic, Kakita Idzuki would not be performing this action, because it never targets him. If he was hit by an action that made it to where he cannot perform actions, he'd still be able to use his printed aciton, because it never targets him. Correct?

This is not just about Kakita Idzuki, this about all the personalities that have printed action that never target themselves.

That's what I thought I said. As you'll see in the next post, though...

Whoops. That's correct. So my earlier post is wrong. Sorry for the confusion.

Could you please clarify what the final answer to the original question is, as no revised answer is given after amendments are made.

I assume this section from the comprehensive rules is relevant:

Reaction: After engaging, once per battle, if you are the Attacker and your current army has more Naval cards than the side opposing it, target your Naval Personality: You have the first opportunity to take a Battle action, which must be performed by the targeted Personality. In cases where multiple cards perform a Battle action, only one need be Naval.

Thank you.

The Personality is performing, so the action is legal to use with the Naval ability.
