Conspiracy targeting

L5R CCG Rules board, 29 June 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I'm just looking to clarify the wording on Conspiracy:

Conspiracy (Event) Choose a Personality. After the next time this game he is destroyed while in an army, you, then the player who last controlled the Personality, each lose 5 Honor.

Should I read the first part ("Choose a personality") as "target a personality in play"?

If there are no personalities in play, can I choose a personality that may be in play at some point? Say, someone that is face up in my opponents provinces, and will come into play on their turn?

If it said "target a personality" I don't think there would be ambiguity.

Thanks

You must choose a personality in play. No targeting is involved. The word "Choose" was chosen, I imagine, to make sure there was no targeting was involved, as targeting can be directed elsewhere, etc.
