Blessings of the Death Lords verification

L5R CCG Rules board, 5 March 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

A player, 5 March 2009

Situation: 1. I declare an attack at province A and assign no units as attackers and my opponent assigns no defenders. 2. I have 2 straightened units outside of the battle, one of which is a cavalry shugenja with the spell Blessings of the Death Lords attached and straightened and has not been previously used. 3. May I bow the spell to move the other unit to the current battlefield?

I'm assuming not, because of restriction placed on Location: If a Battle action is on a card in a unit (a Personality or attachment in play), the unit must be at the current battlefield in order to take that action.

However, I wanted to verify. Thank you!

Blessings of the Death Lords: Battle: Bow this Shugenja, or bow this Spell is he is Cavalry: Move one of your target Personalities to the current battlefield.

Situation: 1. I declare an attack at province A and assign no units as attackers and my opponent assigns no defenders.

If I may interrupt, I've noticed this misconception crop up a few times and would like to clarify this step of your example. You do NOT declare an attack at a particular province.

What you do is declare an attack against another player, which creates battlefields at ALL of his provinces. After assignment to ANY of those battlefields in the Maneuvers segments, you (as the attacker) choose which of those battles to resolve first. Each battle is resolved in an order of your choosing until there are no unresolved battles at any battlefields.

Now, on to your actual question...

2. I have 2 straightened units outside of the battle, one of which is a cavalry shugenja with the spell Blessings of the Death Lords attached and straightened and has not been previously used. 3. May I bow the spell to move the other unit to the current battlefield?

No, you may not for the reason you gave. You COULD, however, move in the unit with the Spell on it, which is allowed by the Exception to the Rule of Location (see here).
