Hida Sozen, experienced "Other players' actions can not destroy Sozen." Will a ranged attack kill him? Or is it 100% impossible to kill him (and any indestructible personality) outside of battle resolution?
destruction and ranged attacks
A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Hida Sozen, experienced "Other players' actions can not destroy Sozen." Will a ranged attack kill him?
No. Sozen's trait will negate his destruction from another player's Ranged Attack action.
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_R#Ranged_Attack: "In an effect, “Ranged X Attack” (where X is a number known as the strength of the ranged attack) is shorthand for “Target a Follower or a Personality without Followers in the current enemy army. If its Force is equal to or less than X, destroy it.”"
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_C#Cannot: "When found in card text, and when referring to a type of cost or effect (e.g., bowing, Force bonuses), “cannot” (or "can not") means that a certain type of effect or cost is negated whenever it occurs."
Or is it 100% impossible to kill him (and any indestructible personality) outside of battle resolution?
Despite the fact I answered "no" to the first question, the answer to THIS question is also "no".
