Heated Discussion + Seppuku

L5R CCG Rules board, 22 November 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I think I know the answer on this question, but I just want to make sure.

Is it possible to seppuku my personality, if I played a card with him which provokes a honor loss while in a Heated Discussion or would he be dishonored? I think I am able to seppuku, because it can't be negated.

Heated Discussion Political Limited: Target another player's Personality. Create a battlefield and assign him to defend there. Assign any number of your Courtier or Magistrate Personalities to attack there. The Defender may then assign any of his Courtier or Magistrate Personalities there. Fight the battle. During the battle, before any Personality is destroyed, dishonor him instead.

Rulebook: Seppuku: An act of ritual suicide. If an effect directs a Personality to commit seppuku, apply the following effects: “Rehonor the Personality, then destroy him; these effects cannot be negated. ” Additionally, all players have the ability: Reaction: Any number of times per turn, before you lose Honor from an action that targeted or was performed by one of your Courtier or Samurai Personalities: He commits seppuku. Reduce the Honor loss to one.

Additional question: But it shouldn't be possible to seppuku if I played a Determination on the Heated Discussion. Am I right?

Please use the search function before asking new questions: see "Heated Discussion + Seppuku".

Determination changes nothing. The rulebook Reaction is still legal to take but the seppuku doesn't destroy the Personality who commits it - she is dishonored instead - so the Honor loss is not reduced.
