Misdirection and Share the Blame

L5R CCG Rules board, 14 September 2008 to 26 September 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Does this ruling:

Misdirection doesn't change which player is considered to be doing the targeting; it only changes who chooses the targets. Choosing the targets and the targeting itself are separate facets of targeting. (emphasis added)

override this ruling?

[...] since Misdirection let you do the targeting, the other player did not target your Courtier

If now Misdirection doesn't change which player is considered to be doing the targeting, then using a Misdirection to choose a courtier as a target would allow me to react with Share the Blame, right?

Consider this issue under discussion, but in the meanwhile, abide by the earlier ruling by Marty Lund.

Alex (Akodo Gilador) was backing up an assertion in my response that I've since reconsidered (see the section marked "Fixed"). I apologize for the discrepancy, and we'll have it all ironed out as soon as possible.

Regarding the inquiry from Bayushi Mamoru here:

Has a resolution been reached regarding the issue of which player does the targeting when misdirection is played as a reaction?

I'm curious, as I'm wondering about the interaction of Bayushi Kaukatsu and Misdirection. Under the current ruling, it appears that if an action was announced and Misdirection was played as a reaction to target Bayushi Kaukatsu with another player's action, the other player would not have to dishonor an honorable samurai.

It appears that this interaction would work the same way with The Emerald Armor (xp) then, as the emerald armor is altering the targeting? Or, perhaps, more accurately performing an action which negates the initial targeting and then assigns a new target- the personality equipped with the emerald armor- if legal?

Thank you for your time and patience regarding this issue.

*** Misdirection

Focus Effect: You may shuffle up to 3 Personalities from your discard pile into your Dynasty deck. Political Gozoku Reaction: Before another player would choose targets for one of his action’s effects during a battle, target one of your Courtier or Gozoku Personalities: You choose the targets instead.

Bayushi Kaukatsu (xp2) 0/2 -/9/0 Scorpion Clan • Imperial • Chancellor • Courtier • Experienced 2 • Unique Abilities on Kaukatsu cannot be copied. After another player's action targets Kaukatsu: The player targets one of his honorable Personalities. Dishonor him. Political Limited: Target a dishonorable Personality. His controller loses 3 Honor, then targets one of his honorable Personalities. Dishonor him.

The Emerald Armor (xp) Armor • Experienced • Unique Attaches to the Emerald Champion paying 4 less Gold. This Personality has +1 PH. Reaction: When one of your Personalities would be targeted by another player's action, bow the Emerald Armor: The action targets this Personality instead, if legal.

The actual targeting is still considered to come from the original targeter. Bayushi Kaukatsu trait could be triggered by his controller using Misdirection an an opponent's action.

Our thanks for everyone's patience, and we're sorry that the aforementioned "ironing out" took a good 12 days.

But, thanks to this issue being brought up, we have finally clarified it in the CR:

http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_T#Target: "A "change to targeting" is anything that changes the target or the player who chooses targeting. Choosing a target is different from, and comes before, the actual targeting. Specifically, if an effect changes the player who chooses targeting, the player who originally did the targeting is still considered to be doing the actual targeting. This applies both to explicit changes to the choosing player (such as Misdirection) and implicit changes (such as Seat of Power)."

@Mamoru

Yes, this new section of the Rules does reverse Marty's earlier ruling on Misdirection and Share the Blame. (See also the pertinent section of my post in your first link, now marked "RE-UN-FIXED". )

So, if you Misdirection... say... an opponent's Peasant Vengeance and choose to have it target one of your Courtiers, you may react with Share the Blame. Even though you made the choice of his target for him, your opponent is still considered to be the one "targeting" his Peasant Vengeance, as he would have if you hadn't interfered.

@Azwaru

Actually, this debate about which player is considered to be doing the targeting does not affect Bayushi Kaukatsu Exp 2 or The Emerald Armor Exp because of their particular wording. They react to targeting from "another player's action". As such, they don't care who does the targeting, only whose action it came from. Flanking Action is a good way to illustrate this distinction:

Let's say Kaukatsu has foolishly wandered into a battle alone and your opponent plays Flanking Action. Kaukatsu's trait would trigger, but you would not be able to react with Share the Blame. This is because Flanking Action is "another player's action" (Kaukatsu's text) but YOU do the targeting (failing to meet Share's trigger "After another player targets...").
