Hi,
Im new to the board and new to l5r. Ive been playing about 2 months now and my friends have ALOT of gold-Lotus cards so we play using the lotus rule book. (not only because of the cards but they also dont like the new rules and just prefer to play by the lotus book)
So one thing that is confusing me (and them) is weather you can pay a cost with a personality outside of a battle durring the battle action segment. The best way I can clarify is to give an example.
First off it seems customary in here (I honestly did search for an answer and as i was searching and reading threads i notice that posters write out what the cards they are mentioning do before the post so if im wrong Im sorry it just seemed like the way things are done here.
Drunken Manteis-Kiho Battle:Target an unbowed monk you control: Target a samurai you control and a personality opposing him. Your samurai issues the opposing Personality an unrefusable challenge. Penalties do not affect your samurais chi for purposes of resolving the duel. Bow the loser.
Example: I have Samurai A attacking one of the defenders provences. He assigns one defender Samurai B. I have one monk at home (Monk C). May I play drunken mantis and target the monk at my home?
Please bear in mind that Im intrested in weather this is legal in LOTUS format, not samuai.
and please if you have time I have one more simple relevant question. Is a personality at home considered Unopposed? If a card read "target an unopposed personality" can you target one at home wheather it's controlled by me or my opponent?
Thank you.
PS: What s the best way to search on this forum for rules? By relivant card text? By card name? or just search with the question you intend to ask?

Under Lotus rules, as long as at least one card at current battlefield was targeted or affected by the action then the Rule of Relevance was satisfied - obviously, you still had to obey all other rules and card texts, etc. In the case of Drunken Mantis, this meant that at least one of your Monk and your Samurai had to be at the current battlefield: if your Monk was at the current battlefield then your Samurai and the challengee could be at any battlefield as long they were at a battlefield; if your Monk was elsewhere, then your Samurai and the challengee had to be at the current battlefield.
To be opposed, a card must be at a battlefield. See Opposing: Refers to something on the other side of the battlefield from the thing being referred to. Only cards in units can be opposing cards. Other cards in a battlefield (e.g., Terrains, Regions) never oppose anything.
As for searching, it's usually possible to find what you need; sometimes you need to be a little creative and try more than one of the things you've suggested.
