Final Wave and Multiple Copies of Unique Personalities

L5R CCG Rules board, 9 August 2008 to 11 August 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Situation: I am a Unicorn player that has no fate side left (unlikely but plausible). In my provinces are Moto Chagatai exp 4 and Moto Chagatai exp 5. If I play 'The Final Wave', what happens? If only one Chagatai would come into play, if I play Determination before announcing the Final Wave would both of them come into play?

Thanks.

In my provinces are Moto Chagatai exp 4 and Moto Chagatai exp 5. If I play 'The Final Wave', what happens?

The Final Wave's ability reads "Limited: If you have no cards left in your Fate or Dynasty deck: Bring all face-up Personalities in your provinces into play, waiving costs and ignoring restrictions."

Both Moto Chagatai enter play as well as any other face-up Personalities in your provinces, even if there is another Unique card which title is Moto Chagatai in play at the moment, because the restriction from their Unique keyword is waived by The Final Wave's effect. [fixed]

If only one Chagatai would come into play, if I play Determination before announcing the Final Wave would both of them come into play?

Determination is unable to allow an action that brings a card into play to ignore the Unique keyword on this card, because it is not a negation: it is a restriction on the legality of bringing that card into play (see below). Ignoring restrictions comes directly from The Final Wave's text.

Glossary, Unique: "A card with the Unique keyword can not enter play if any player controls a Unique card with the same title." Glossary, Cannot: "When found in game rules text, the phrase “cannot” applies to the legality of doing something in the first place; it does not imply that doing that thing is merely negated."

In reference to http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=905281#p905281.

You suggest that having an Unique card already in play will keep other versions of that card from entering play from The Final Wave. Could you please elaborate on why this restriction wouldn't be waived?

Oups, I forgot the "ignoring restrictions" part of The Final Wave. Fixing.
