Ambush, Purge the Weak, and Desperate Gambit

L5R CCG Rules board, 11 July 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

According to this ruling: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=68820#p889532 I can use Purge to take an additional limited action before the battle starts. If I use this to play desperate gambit will it destroy the two personalities present?

Desperate Gambit: Limited: Dishonor one of your target Samurai Personalities: Target another player's Personality with equal or lower Chi. If either target assigns opposing the other this turn, destroy them both.

It seems like it would because Ambush specifically "assigns" both personalities, and they have assigned opposing each other. Now if Desperate Gambit, said "the next time...." But it doesn't, so what do we think? Thanks

No. Ambush did assign both Personalities but Desperate Gambit's effect is not retroactive, thus it does not look back in the past to see whether either target assigned opposing the other since the start of turn, otherwise its text would explicitly refer to assignments done earlier this turn.
