Imbue Chi

L5R CCG Rules board, 13 June 2008 to 16 June 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Before Samurai Edition an attacking army used to destroy the defending army and the province simultaneously. Now, according to the Comprehensive Rules it isn't the case anymore:

B. Follow one of the procedures under this heading, in order, depending on the battle’s outcome. If the Attacker Wins: 1. The Attacker simultaneously destroys all cards in the defending army. 2. If the attacking army's Force was greater than the defending army’s Force plus the Province Strength of the province the current battlefield is associated with, the Attacker destroys the province. 3. The Attacker gains Honor from resolution equal to twice the number of cards in the defending army that were destroyed by the effects of resolution. Before the Attacker gains 1 or more points of Honor from resolution, if the attacking army contains one or more dishonorable Personalities, these Personalities are all restored to honorable status, and the Honor gain from resolution is negated.

Does this mean that under SE rules I can play Imbue Chi even if I had some Personalities in play but they were all destroyed by the battle?

Imbue Chi

Kiho Reaction: Before battle resolution destroys one of your provinces, if you control no Personalities, target a face-up Shugenja in any of your provinces: Turn all cards in your provinces face-up. Bring into play any number of face-up Personalities in your provinces waiving costs.

Yes, that looks correct, for the reasons you imply. Army destruction occurs first, then province destruction. Just before the latter, you can announce Imbue Chi. When you do, you are meeting its "if you control no Personalities" restriction if, as in your example, all your Personalities were destroyed in that battle.
