Determination and The Last One

L5R CCG Rules board, 23 May 2008 to 24 May 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If I use Determination when I announce The Last One does this have a lasting effect. In other words does it keep the effects caused by The Last One from being negated.

For example: If I use determination when I play The Last One and then my opponent plays a Hired Killer with a determination against my personality targeted with The Last One what will happen?

I believe that the action will fail because when I played the determination with The Last One it has the lasting effect of keeping the effects of the Last One from being negated. In other words his determination tries to keep The Last One from negating the destruction but the Determination I played keeps those effects from being negated. Thus in order to destroy my personality he would need to play more determinations for the action than I played when I play The Last One.

I believe this because of how Determination +Sneak Attack interacts with Determination +Reinforce the Gates

I know this question must be very confusing but I've worded it the best that I can, if you need me to try and clear up any of it please let me know, I really need an answer to this.

Thank you very much and here is the relevant card text

Determination: Dark Virtue Reaction: Before you announce an action, target one of your Samurai: The action can not have its effects negated or have its targeting changed. After the action destroys any Personality, remove him from the game.

The Last One: Open: Target your Personality: Destroy all of your other Personalities. If this destroyed at least four Personalities, your target permanently gains +4F, and until the end of the game, other players' actions can not bow, dishonor, move, or destroy him.

Yes, but only during the turn that you played Determination. Because Determination has no stated duration, it has the default duration of lasting until the end of the turn (even though the effects of the action you played it with may last longer).

As per Marty's second bit of "Determination Math" in the above link, Determination + Negation action (The Last One, in this case) trumps Determination + regular action. The Hired Killer player would need to use two Determinations to overcome your own Determination PLUS The Last One's own negation. Basically, whoever has the most negation wins.
