Misdirection, different effects, different targeting

L5R CCG Rules board, 7 May 2008 to 8 May 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Misdirection - Political Gozoku Reaction: Before another player would choose targets for one of his action’s effects during a battle, target one of your Courtier or Gozoku Personalities: You choose the targets instead.

Misdirection reacts before choosing targets. One action can have targeting at a variety of times (required targeting, optional targeting during effects resolution, targeting when resolving a delayed effect). I presume that Misdirection can respond to any of these targets (so long as it is a target to be chosen by the player taking the action, of course).

When you react to an action with Misdirection, do you only get to choose the targets that are about to be chosen, or do you also get to make later targeting choices as well?

I read Misdirection to allow me to, essentially, pick an effect (e.g., move home) and then choose all targets to which that effect applies, regardless of when the targeting occurs.

For example, Daidoji Kikaze's ability targets one or more units. One unit is, therefore, chosen during required targeting. The others are optional targeting and chosen during effects. The same set of effects (straighten, move) apply to all targets. Therefore, when I react to the required targeting with Misdirection, I also get to choose the optional targets (when optional targeting rolls around).

On the other hand, there's something like Extended Maneuvers. Extended Maneuvers appears to have two different effects for its two different delayed targets - "target and straighten a Samurai" and "target and bow a non-Samurai." These seem to be two different effects (that is, not both from "one of [my opponent's] action's effects") such that my Misdirection only lets me choose one of those two targets. That is, Reacting to the straightening targeting would not let me choose the target to be bowed.

How much of this is correct?

And, on a side note, I may just be blind, but I can't find in the Comprehensive Rules the place where is says that optional targeting happens as effects resolve. The SE Rulebook states this in the section on Required Targeting (p.30). The required targeting section Comprehensive Rules provide that targets in a delayed effect, optional targets, and targets chosen by another player are not required targeting. This section also expressly provides when targeting for a delayed effect and targeting chosen by another player occur (respectively, when the delayed effect happens and when it is described, usually in effects). However, I don't see where it provides that optional targeting happens as effects resolve (or when it is described in the card text). Like I said, I'm probably just blanking in my reading.

When you react to an action with Misdirection, do you only get to choose the targets that are about to be chosen, or do you also get to make later targeting choices as well?

Tentatively, just the current instance of targeting (usually during the targeting step). "Before another player would choose targets for one of his action’s effects" really seems to indicate a specific case of targeting, not blanket ability to change any targeting in the action at all.

Please note the following additions to the rules wiki for Misdirection, which override the ruling above.

http://rules.l5r.com/Rulings_M#Misdirection: "The timing point of Misdirection's action trigger is: during the other player's action's Required Targeting Step, in between the last required targeting in the constraints block (if any) and the first required targeting in the effects block (if any). Misdirection can be played even if there is no targeting in the constraints block or no targeting in the effects block. [CLARIFICATION, May 8 2008]

"The effect of Misdirection's action allows its player to choose targets for any targeting described in the other action's effects block, including required targeting, optional targeting, and targeting of delayed effects. [CLARIFICATION, May 8 2008]"
