Oni? Tsuno?

L5R CCG Rules board, 4 May 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Are the "Oni no" creatures considered Onis if they do not have the printed Oni trait? And likewise with "Tsuno" creatures?

As of Samurai Edition, titles of cards do not confer keywords to those cards. This also applies to cards printed prior to Samurai Edition that are legal for the current, Samurai Edition tournament arc. Also, "keywords" is now the proper term for those bold things in the text box (ie, Shadowlands, Samurai, Duelist etc.) Although they did used to be called "traits", that term now only applies to the text after the keywords and before the abilities (if any); see: http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Traits.

Now, all that being said, there are rules that exist to assist playing older cards under the current rules while still having them work as intended. These are the rules for Legacy Format. Under those rules:

http://rules.l5r.com/Older_Cards "Card titles also count toward determining keywords. This is true when determining an older card’s keywords and when an older card is looking for keywords. (For example, a card titled "Cavalry Reserves" is a Cavalry card. Likewise, the Holding Shokansuru will pay for the Samurai-legal card Summon Maseru no Oni). This does NOT apply to the "Tactical" keyword."

While Legacy Format rules do ban 6 older cards from official Legacy tournaments, ignoring that aspect, they are primarily useful for playing all cards ever printed together harmoniously.
