Ikoma Yasuko Clarification

L5R CCG Rules board, 2 May 2008 to 3 May 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

viewtopic.php?f=59&t=67692 a question about this ruling I was under the impression that since the destruction happened simultaneously, reactions like that couldn't happen

If they can...can a Crab player use "courage in death"? and if they can.... Do force bonuses (or penalties) that happen after tallying up the force and deciding the winner effect the outcome of the battle?

Indeed during battle resolution, destructions of all cards in the losing army are simultaneous but Yasuko's Reaction is taken before they occur so she hasn't been destroyed yet and she can sacrifice herself to negate a Lion clanmate's destruction.

Any player can play this card but it is not very helpful. Armies' total Forces are calculated only once (in step A of battle resolution: see Battles, Resolution Segment), before the losing army is destroyed (in step B) when Courage in Death is played. Modifying any army's total Force after it is calculated has no effect on the outcome of the battle. Of course the Force bonus from Courage in Death can be granted to a Personality at any other location than the current battlefield. If played by a Crab player, delaying his Personality's destruction until after the battle ends would make the winning player gain two less Honor from this battle's resolution.
